The Rejection

Chapter Two: The Rejection The clearing had never felt so cold. Amara’s chest was tight, her hands trembling at her sides. Every eye in the Nightfang Pack seemed to pierce through her, some with curiosity, others with judgment. She had never felt so exposed, so small. David stood a few steps away, his posture perfect, commanding. But there was something in his eyes—something that both terrified and drew her in. A connection she couldn’t explain, a bond that pulsed under the surface like a living thing. She wanted to speak. To ask him what was happening. To demand that he explain why her entire world had just shifted. But when he opened his mouth, the words that came out were not what she expected. “Step forward,” he said, his voice steady, deep, and calm—like the authority of a storm. Amara swallowed hard, her legs heavy. Every instinct screamed to run, but something else held her in place, invisible chains tightening around her heart. She stepped forward anyway. The pack was silent now. Every wolf, every elder, every pup was watching. David’s eyes bore into hers. “Amara… you are not a wolf.” She blinked. Her lips parted. “I… I— she stammered “You have no wolf.” His tone was final, almost cold. “An Alpha cannot mate with a human. This… this is impossible.” Her heart sank. The thread of connection she felt earlier snapped like a brittle rope. “No,” she whispered. “You don’t understand. I—I feel it too. Something—something happened between us.” David shook his head. “You feel nothing that matters. The bond chooses, yes, but it also obeys strength. You are not strong enough. You cannot be my mate.” A wave of shame and pain swept through her. The murmurs around the clearing grew louder. “She’s human!” one of the wolves whispered. “She doesn’t belong here,” another muttered. Amara’s chest tightened, tears threatening to spill. I’m not supposed to exist in this world, she thought, I’m not meant for this. I’m nothing. Her legs gave way, and she turned, fleeing from the clearing before anyone could stop her. She ran through the dark forest, the cold air burning her lungs, her thoughts a storm of confusion and heartbreak. Lila’s voice called after her, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. Every step took her further from humiliation, further from a bond she had barely understood. By the time she stopped, she was at the edge of the forest, near the river that ran like silver under the moonlight. She collapsed against a tree, her body shaking. Tears finally fell freely, carving tracks down her cheeks. Why me? she whispered into the night. Why now? Why him? The moon reflected on the river’s surface, and as she stared into its glow, a strange warmth stirred inside her chest. It was subtle at first—a flutter, a heartbeat that didn’t belong to her own. Amara gasped. She felt it again. That pull. That connection. But it was different now. Darker. Stronger. Something inside her stirred, and with it, a flicker of power she hadn’t known existed. Her fingers dug into the earth, and she could feel strength coursing through her muscles. She could feel her senses sharpening—the rustle of the leaves, the movement of the river water, the faintest whisper of wind against her skin. I’m… not human, she realized. The revelation shocked her, but it also ignited a spark deep within—a spark of determination. If she truly was something more, something powerful, then maybe… maybe she didn’t need anyone’s approval. Not even his. Back at the clearing, David watched her leave. His expression, so controlled moments ago, was now tense, conflicted. He knew something had changed. He could feel it in his chest—the bond pulling, tugging at him with an intensity he had never experienced before. And for the first time, he felt fear. Not fear of battle, or rivals, or losing the pack. Fear of what Amara was becoming… and what it meant for him. For both of them, the night was far from over. The Full Moon Ceremony had revealed more than a mate bond—it had revealed truths neither of them were ready to face. And somewhere deep in the forest, a power that had been hidden for years began to stir, waiting for the moment Amara would fully embrace it
