“Broke her, Bradley?” Alex said, cutting Bradley and my verbal tug of war short. “Any chance you can clarify?”
And still Bitsy didn’t say a word.
“She was acting like a normal person and then Mallory came in and she started to act weird.” He turned to me. “You broke her. I know you didn’t mean to.”
Alex gave me a look I interpreted to mean, “Shut it or I might kick you in the shin.”
So I shut it. Besides, I was an adult. I didn’t need the last word. Stewing seemed like an adult-type response, though. Since when had Bradley become a reliable arbiter of normal versus weird?
“Bitsy?” Alex approached her cautiously. “Can I look at your back?”
