Poker-Face Fail
Detective Ruiz had an open murder investigation, and the Society had a vested interest in the outcome of that investigation. These two facts did not coexist peacefully in the same universe, which made the presence of his unmarked car in my driveway an unpleasant surprise.
He would be looking for an accounting of our highly suspect actions over the last few days. Some might call it tampering. Sabotage might even be a more accurate term for what we’d done. But did he have to come looking for answers when I was sleep-deprived and reeling from the roughest of all rough days? Especially when all I wanted to do was forget that particular adventure and move on to the next—namely, solving Bradley’s break-in and getting him back into his condo.
