Chapter Ten – The Awakening ‎The hospital room was dim except for the steady glow of the heart monitor, its rhythmic beeping the only sign that Ethan Carter was still tethered to life. Isabella sat by his side, her hand wrapped gently around his. ‎Day after day, she came. Sometimes she read aloud—newspaper clippings, short stories, even factory schedules—anything to fill the silence. Other times, she simply spoke to him. ‎“Ethan,” she whispered one night, pressing her forehead to the back of his hand, “you once told me the world isn’t fair, but we have to keep working anyway. Don’t you dare leave me now. Not when I need you most.” ‎Her words dissolved into tears she tried to hide, but her shoulders trembled. ‎Hours later, just as she was drifting into restless sleep in the chair, she felt it—a faint movement. ‎Her eyes snapped open. Ethan’s fingers twitched under hers. Once. Twice. ‎She gasped, covering her mouth. “Ethan?” ‎The beeping quickened. His eyelids fluttered, struggling against the heavy fog of unconsciousness. Isabella leaned closer, heart racing. ‎“Ethan, it’s me. Isabella. I’m here.” ‎A hoarse, broken sound escaped his lips. His eyes opened—confused, unfocused at first—but then they landed on her. Recognition flickered. ‎“Isabella…” His voice was barely audible, but it was enough to send tears spilling down her face. ‎“I’m here,” she said, clutching his hand. “I never left.” ‎For the first time since the accident, his fingers curled around hers. Weak, trembling—but alive. ‎And in that fragile moment, a new strength blossomed between them. The kind born not from comfort, but from fire and survival. ‎
