Chapter Six: The Man Who Controlled Everything The night air between them felt suddenly fragile. Lena stared at Adrian, her mind struggling to process the words he had just spoken. I never stopped loving you. For years she had imagined hearing those words again. In quiet moments, when memories crept back and loneliness felt heavier than usual, she had wondered what it would feel like if Adrian ever returned and said exactly that. But now that he had… it didn’t feel simple. Nothing about this situation was simple. “Adrian,” she said softly, “you can’t just come back after seven years and say things like that.” His expression didn’t change. “Why not?” “Because life doesn’t work that way,” she replied, her voice tightening slightly. “You have a fiancée. You have a family expecting you to marry her. And suddenly you’re telling me you’re ready to walk away from all of it?” “I am.” Lena shook her head slowly. “You say that now, but you don’t know what that will cost you.” Adrian looked almost amused by that. “Oh, I know exactly what it will cost.” Before Lena could respond, the low roar of an engine echoed through the quiet town square. Both of them turned. A long black car rolled slowly into the street and stopped beneath the nearest streetlight. It was sleek, expensive, and completely out of place in a small town like Avelyn. Adrian’s expression darkened immediately. “Too late,” he muttered under his breath. The car door opened. A tall man stepped out. Even from a distance, there was something commanding about him. His posture was straight, his movements calm but deliberate. The streetlight cast a faint glow across his sharp features and silver-streaked hair. Lena didn’t need anyone to introduce him. She had seen his picture once before, years ago in a newspaper article Adrian had shown her with reluctant pride. Victor Hale. Adrian’s father. The man responsible for the powerful Hale Corporation. And the man who had forced Adrian to leave Avelyn seven years ago. Victor Hale adjusted the sleeve of his dark coat before walking slowly toward them. Each step carried the quiet authority of someone used to being obeyed. When he reached them, his eyes briefly studied Lena before settling on his son. “So,” Victor said calmly. “This is where you’ve been hiding.” Adrian crossed his arms. “I’m not hiding.” Victor gave a faint, unimpressed smile. “You disappeared without answering my calls. In my world, that’s the same thing.” Lena could feel the tension between them immediately. This wasn’t simply a father and son arguing. This was a power struggle. Victor finally looked at Lena again. “And you must be Lena.” She stiffened slightly. “Yes.” His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he nodded once. “I see why you were such a distraction.” Adrian’s tone hardened instantly. “Don’t talk about her like that.” Victor ignored the comment completely. “Clara tells me you’ve decided to end your engagement.” “I have.” Victor sighed slowly, as if dealing with a stubborn child who refused to understand something obvious. “Adrian, you’re about to inherit one of the largest companies in the country. The Hale Corporation does not run on emotions. It runs on strategy.” “And forcing me into a marriage is part of that strategy?” Adrian replied coldly. “It’s called responsibility.” Adrian laughed quietly. “No. It’s called control.” For a moment, the silence between them grew dangerously thick. Victor’s eyes sharpened slightly, but his voice remained calm. “You’ve always had a dramatic way of looking at things.” Then he turned toward Lena again. “You must feel very special,” he said smoothly. “Why?” Lena asked quietly. “Because my son is apparently willing to destroy his entire future for you.” The words made Lena’s stomach tighten. Adrian stepped forward. “I’m not destroying anything.” Victor raised an eyebrow. “No?” Then he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small envelope. He handed it to Adrian. Adrian stared at it suspiciously. “What’s this?” “Open it.” Adrian tore the envelope carefully. His expression changed the moment he read the contents. The color drained slightly from his face. “What is this?” he demanded. Victor’s voice remained calm. “That,” he said, “is the contract for the merger between the Hale Corporation and Clara’s family company.” Adrian’s eyes scanned the paper again, more carefully this time. Victor continued speaking. “If you cancel your engagement, the merger collapses.” “And?” Adrian said, though his voice was tighter now. “And the company loses billions.” Lena felt her heart sink. Victor folded his hands behind his back like a man delivering a simple business report. “And unfortunately,” he added calmly, “thousands of employees would lose their jobs as a result.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You’re bluffing.” Victor shook his head slowly. “I never bluff.” The night suddenly felt much colder. Adrian stood frozen, the paper trembling slightly in his hand. For the first time since Lena had seen him that morning, he looked uncertain. Victor noticed it immediately. “You see,” he continued calmly, “this was never just about you.” Adrian clenched the paper in his fist. “You planned this.” “Of course I did.” Adrian let out a quiet, bitter laugh. “So I either marry Clara… or destroy the company.” Victor didn’t deny it. “That’s the responsibility of leadership.” Lena felt her chest tighten painfully. The situation had suddenly grown much larger than she expected. This wasn’t just a relationship problem. This was a life-altering decision. Victor’s eyes shifted toward her once more. “It’s unfortunate,” he said, almost politely. “Because from a business perspective… you seem very expensive.” Adrian’s anger flared instantly. “That’s enough.” Victor looked mildly amused. “Is it?” Adrian stepped closer to him. “I’m not marrying Clara.” Victor studied him carefully, searching his face. “Then you’re choosing her,” he said, nodding slightly toward Lena. Adrian didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” The answer hung in the air. Lena felt her heart twist painfully. Victor sighed quietly, like a man disappointed but not surprised. “Then you should understand the consequences.” He turned and walked calmly back toward his car. Before opening the door, he stopped and looked over his shoulder. “You have twenty-four hours to reconsider.” His gaze briefly rested on Lena. “For your sake… I hope he does.” The car door shut. Moments later, the engine started and the long black vehicle disappeared down the empty road. The town square fell silent again. Adrian stood still, the crumpled contract still in his hand. Lena slowly turned to face him. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “You can’t do this.” Adrian looked at her. “Yes, I can.” “No,” she said, her eyes filling with worry. “You don’t understand.” “Then help me understand.” Lena took a slow breath. “Loving me might cost you everything.” Adrian didn’t look away. “I already lost everything once,” he said quietly. “I’m not losing you too.”
