Chapter.4

“What…” Jackson tried to speak, but the words came out broken, his tongue heavy. “Oh, Jackson,” Savannah said sweetly, though her voice carried poison. She came closer, heels clicking against the floor. “You should really be careful about what you drink. Especially when you don’t know who poured it.” Jackson’s foggy brain clicked. Mr. Humphrey wasn’t an investor. The meeting wasn’t real. His own wife and cousin had set him up. “Why?” he croaked, the single word costing him everything. Savannah leaned down, face level with his. Her perfect smile looked sharper than any knife. “Because, dear husband, you have something we want. And after tonight… you’ll give it to us.” Kai appeared at his other side, smug as ever. Together they pulled Jackson up, his body too weak to stand on its own. The irony stung. The two betrayers were the only ones holding him upright. “The presidential suite,” Savannah said coolly as they dragged him toward the elevator. “Top floor. No one disturbs us there.” The elevator ride blurred. And it kept blurring until he lost consciousness. Kai and Savannah laughed at his state knowing how accomplished their mission appeared to be. The presidential suite was the hotel’s crown jewel. Huge, glamorous, a room made for kings. Tonight, it was a cage. Kai and Savannah dumped him on the massive bed like luggage. “Perfect,” Savannah said, fixing her hair. “Now we just wait.” “She’ll be here soon,” Kai added, checking his watch. “Traffic’s light this time of night.” “Once she’s here and we get the photos,” Savannah said, pacing like a predator, “it’s over for you, Jackson. The board will never forgive a CEO caught in a p**********n scandal. They’ll force you out.” “And then,” Kai said, smiling wide, “the company finally comes back to where it belongs. My side of the family.” But then hours passed and Kai grew restless, pacing in circles. “Where the hell is she?” he snapped. “I don’t know,” Savannah hissed. She also was beginning to lose her calm. . She dialed a number. After waiting for a few minutes, she swore. “Voicemail. Again.” “This is bad,” Kai muttered. “Really bad. The drug won’t last forever. If he wakes up before we get those pictures—” “She’ll come,” Savannah snapped, though doubt crept into her voice. “She has to.” Another hour crawled by and still no sign of the hired lady who was supposed to finish their mission. Kai dropped into a chair, running a hand through his hair. His face looked tired, strained. “We’re screwed. Whoever this girl is, she’s not coming. What do we do” “We’ve come too far to stop now. We need another way.” Savannah replied, her evil mind ruminating on a new scheme. “Another way? What, you got another hooker on call? Because I sure don’t.” Savannah hesitated, chewing her lip. “We could…” She stopped. “Could what?” Kai pushed. “Nothing. It’s too risky.” Then both their phones buzzed. Notifications lit up. They grabbed their devices like drowning people grabbing for air. But the look on their faces after reading? Panic. The hooker who they had hired had finally been able to reach their phones with a message. She told them she had been involved in an accident and was on her way to the hospital. Her phone had shattered during the accident and she had to reach them through another person's phone. “f**k!” Kai yelled in anger as he walked out of the room, while Savannah ran after him. “We can't just bail Kai” she screamed, trying to catch up with him but he was too angry to think of another option. Every time he had a plan, nature always did it best to fight for Jackson and this time, he was too frustrated to fight it. Meanwhile, in the hotel bar, a young woman nursed a broken heart, drowning in cheap liquor, and completely unaware she was about to be pulled into a game she hadn’t chosen. The trap was perfect. It only caught the wrong prey.
