Past Meets Present

Damien's Pov Nice one, Skylar. I slid into the driver's seat and shut the door behind me. After tossing my phone onto the passenger seat, I inserted the key into the ignition and turned it. The engine came to life for a second before falling silent. “Fuck.” The tank was empty. I’d driven without even checking the gas. With a frustrated sigh, I grabbed my phone and called the only person who could help me right now-Damon. His name appeared on the screen before I could dial his number. I answered and climbed out of the car, phone pressed to my ear as I stepped onto the road. “I’m on my way to the airport. Just wanted to hear from you.” His loud voice made me pull the phone away from my ear. “Come pick me up." “Are you being serious right now? I should leave something important just to get you? Where are your manners, Damien?” “That’s your business. I’m sending you the address right now.” I ended the call and texted him the address written on the signboard. My gaze dropped to my shirt, stained with frosting. I looked like a total mess right now. I quickly sent another message, asking him to buy a shirt too. Damon’s car pulled up, and he ran a hand through his hair, staring at me like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. “What happened to you? You look like s**t, man.” I reached for the passenger's door and flung it open. “Not so fast.”His hand shot out. “Apologize first.” My eyes narrowed. “For what?” He folded his arms. “Don’t play dumb. There’s still a red mark around my neck.” Ignoring him, I snatched the packaged shirt from his grip, tearing it open as I slid into the passenger seat. My shirt came off, and I tossed it onto the back seat before slipping on the new shirt. I grabbed his collar and pulled it aside to inspect his neck. There was nothing on his neck. My fingers pressed into the spot, earning a low chuckle from him. “Gotcha.” His lips curled into a grin as he stepped on the engine. “I thought you were with your pretty vixen.” He looked at me for a second before his tone turned serious. “Where did you send the men off to?” I leaned back in the driver's seat and rubbed my jaw. “To escort my soon-to-be wife." “It's just a matter of time. I'm patiently waiting for the lawsuit against you. When the Morrisons come after you, I'm …" “Drop me off at Morrison Holdings. You can get me a good lawyer after the lawsuit” My phone vibrated in my pocket. I glanced at the screen before answering. "Boss... we lost her. “And you’re calling to tell me that?” I stared ahead, my voice cold. “You’re not ashamed?” "We tried to catch up, but she swerved into oncoming traffic. One of the new SUVs collided with a parked vehicle while trying to avoid the crash." “Find her,” I ordered, my voice dropping low. “If anything happens to her, every one of you is in trouble.” “Yes, boss." Damon turned sharply. "Hold on, that's not my car, right?” His grip tightened around the steering wheel as he shot me a look. “Keep your damn eyes on the road.” The distance on the tracker decreased with every passing second. Even after a near-death experience, she still gave a damn about work. That girl was impossible. I rubbed my forehead and glanced at Damon, keeping a straight face. “How do you make a woman fall for you?” A vein showed on his forehead as he tried to hold it in. He covered his mouth with his palm disguising a laugh as a cough. I shot him a glare. “May that cough kill you.” We were already there. I stepped out of the car and slammed the door shut. Damon sped off, raising his middle finger at me and shaking his head. My gaze shifted to the billboard hanging across the glass building. Skylar stared down from it, her arms crossed beneath the company logo. The glass doors opened, and she stepped out. Perfect timing. She took her phone from her bag, a frown on her lips as she spoke. Still on her phone, she was inches away from walking into me when she finally raised her head and met my gaze. She stumbled backward, her phone slipping from her hand. I caught it before it hit the ground and placed it on her palm. Her grip on her bag tightened, she took a breath, and stepped closer, her eyes fixed on me. Predictable Skylar. The moment she swung her bag at me, I caught the strap pulling her closer, my arms wrapped around her waist, and she went completely still. “We have some unfinished business, you know?” “Bastard,” she sneered, stomping hard on my foot, her chest heaving. I released her, glancing down at my foot before looking back at her. “ Sweetheart, you really like things the hard way, don’t you?” “Sweetheart?” She gritted her teeth and stepped closer. “The next time you call me that, I might kill you, bastard. I hate you with everything in me. Stay away from me!” I nodded toward the security standing outside the building. “You could have them drag me away right now, but you haven’t. Why is that, Sky? Starting to enjoy my attention?” She stared at me for a few seconds before bursting into laughter, her shoulders shaking as she struggled to catch her breath. “Are you done?” She straightened and wiped the tears from her lashes with her palm, still laughing. “I really do like you, Mr. Damien. You're an interesting fellow.” She clutched her bag tightly. “But don't think you're invisible. I've got everything, I mean every single thing, about you. Right in here.” My brows pulled together. “Oh, really? Can I take a peek? Let's see what you've got in there.” She spun on her heel and headed for the road. I watched her walk away, my eyes following every movement. She had the perfect body, the kind men could easily lose their minds over. And she had no idea just how tempting she was. Striding toward her, she quickened her pace, nearly breaking into a run, but I caught up with her and slipped my hand around hers. I knew she wanted to say something. To cuss the hell out of me. But she looked away, her eyes shifting to the traffic light. “This is new. Should I be scared?” “Probably. Because if you don't let go of my hand before that light turns green, don't blame me if I do something stupid.” “Now I'm scared.” I raised a brow. “I'd love to see the 'something stupid' you're talking about.” “Well, let's see.” The corners of her mouth twitched upward. I loved the feel of her small hand in mine. I lifted it and pressed a soft kiss to her knuckles. She twisted her hand, but I didn't let go. My gaze stayed on the road, fixed on the traffic light, which had now turned green. Two figures walked toward us on the opposite side of the road, their hands interlocked. Her ex-fiancé and a woman giggling beside him. I glanced down at Skylar for just a second. Her brows drew together as she followed my gaze. Jace lifted his eyes and met mine. He came to a stop. The woman beside him followed his stare, her brows pulling together as her eyes landed on us. My grip on hers tightened. “Don't let go of my hand, Damien,” she whispered, pressing closer to me. “Like I would ever.”
