Dru woke with a smile on her lips. Hunter was up but out. Dru used the latrine and walked down to the woods to get an armload of wood and met Hunter coming up with the soup, pot full of water in one hand and a bundle of sticks in the other. “Is cornmeal mush alright for breakfast?” he said as they passed. “I’d rather have biscuits,” she laughed over her shoulder. She gathered her firewood and cut a couple of willow switches from next to the creek, then hurried back to the house. The overnight cold had left the morning sky clear as crystal and it only took a few minutes for the cold to work through her clothing.
