Chapter Twelve
The Man Who Wore My Face
No one spoke.
The library itself seemed to hold its breath.
Before Elias stood a man with his face.
The same dark hair.
The same eyes.
The same scar above the left eyebrow.
Even the same expression of quiet determination.
It was as though a mirror had stepped out of the darkness and learned to breathe.
The stranger smiled gently.
Not with malice.
With sorrow.
"I wondered," he said softly, "which one of us would remember first."
Elias felt his pulse racing.
"Who are you?"
The man tilted his head.
"I've asked myself that question for ten thousand years."
---
The Forgotten Legion parted, forming a silent corridor behind him.
None of them dared approach.
Instead, they lowered their heads.
Not in worship.
In recognition.
The stranger slowly removed the black crystal crown from his head.
"I have worn your burden long enough."
He held the crown before Elias.
"It belongs to you."
Elias took a step back.
"I don't want it."
"I know."
The stranger smiled sadly.
"You never did."
---
The Bell Keeper suddenly raised his voice.
"Don't touch the crown!"
His warning echoed through the endless library.
"That is no ordinary crown."
The stranger nodded.
"He speaks the truth."
"It is the Crown of the Forgotten King."
"It remembers every ruler who ever lived."
"And every ruler who never should have."
The black crystal shimmered.
Within its polished surface Elias saw countless faces trapped beneath the stone.
Kings.
Queens.
Conquerors.
Prophets.
Some cried.
Some screamed.
Others smiled as though they had surrendered long ago.
---
Mara stepped beside Elias.
"Tell us your name."
The stranger's smile faded.
"I cannot."
"Why?"
"Because it was the first memory sacrificed to seal the Thirty-First Midnight."
He looked into Elias's eyes.
"When you gave up your own true name..."
"...mine disappeared with it."
Auren lowered his head.
"I remember him."
Everyone turned.
The child spoke with tears in his eyes.
"He was your reflection."
"Not a reflection in glass..."
"A reflection of your soul."
---
Fragments of memory burst into Elias's mind.
He saw two identical young men standing beneath twin suns.
One clothed in silver.
The other in white.
They laughed together as brothers, though they shared no blood.
The elder guardians had called them The Twin Witnesses.
One remembered every beginning.
The other remembered every ending.
Together, they ensured that nothing good was ever forgotten...
And nothing evil was ever repeated.
Then came the Great Forgetting.
One Witness vanished from memory.
The other was left behind.
Alone.
Waiting.
---
"You..." Elias whispered.
"You stayed."
The stranger nodded.
"I remained so that one day..."
"...I could remind you who you truly are."
A deep sadness crossed his face.
"But every century stole another piece of me."
"I have forgotten my own voice."
"My childhood."
"My family."
"I even forgot why I kept waiting."
He looked at Elias with trembling eyes.
"Until today."
---
Suddenly, the Crown of the Forgotten King began to glow.
Dark cracks spread across its surface.
The Bell Keeper's expression changed instantly.
"Everyone, get back!"
Too late.
The crown split open.
A torrent of black mist erupted into the air.
Within the swirling darkness appeared thousands of ghostly faces.
Each one whispered a different name.
Names from forgotten kingdoms.
Names erased from history.
Names that had once shaped the world.
The whispers grew louder.
Until they merged into one terrible sentence.
"RETURN WHAT WAS TAKEN."
The library shook violently.
The shelves cracked.
Books burst apart.
The Forgotten Legion dropped to one knee.
Even the Gate of First Shadows fell silent.
---
Far above the broken heavens, the First Watcher closed its great eye.
Darkness swept across the sky.
Not because the light had vanished.
Because something greater had hidden it.
A voice echoed from beyond the stars.
Calm.
Ancient.
Unmistakable.
"The Fourth Bell approaches."
The Hollow King looked upward.
For the first time...
Fear crossed his face.
"No..."
"He has awakened."
---
Elias frowned.
"Who?"
The Bell Keeper answered in a whisper.
"The Last Scribe."
"The one who wrote the first story."
"And the final ending."
Auren's expression became solemn.
"If the Last Scribe finishes writing..."
"There will be no more choices."
"There will be no more futures."
"There will be only what has already been written."
---
The stranger who wore Elias's face slowly walked towards the centre of the library.
He raised both hands.
The black mist surrounding the broken crown gathered around him like a cloak.
"I can still hold them back."
"For a little while."
Elias shook his head.
"You'll die."
The stranger smiled peacefully.
"I have been dying..."
"...since the day you were forgotten."
He placed a hand on Elias's shoulder.
His touch was warm.
Real.
"You once saved me."
"Now let me save you."
Before Elias could stop him, the stranger stepped into the storm of shadows.
The black mist wrapped around his body.
Light and darkness collided.
A blinding explosion filled the library.
When the light faded...
The stranger was gone.
Only the broken crown remained.
Resting silently upon the stone floor.
---
The Book of the Forgotten Hour floated into the air once more.
Its pages turned slowly.
A single sentence appeared in letters of silver fire.
THE TWIN SHALL FALL...
The words paused.
Another line formed beneath them.
BUT HIS MEMORY SHALL BECOME THE KEY.
Elias gently picked up the broken crown.
This time...
It did not resist him.
Instead, it whispered a single word that no one else heard.
A name.
His forgotten name.
The moment it entered his heart, every candle in the library burst into brilliant white flame.
The Bell Keeper staggered backwards in disbelief.
Mara covered her mouth.
Auren smiled through tears.
Far beyond the shattered heavens, the Hollow King closed his eyes and whispered,
"You remember..."
Then, somewhere beyond time itself, a lone quill scratched across ancient parchment.
The Last Scribe had written Elias's true name.
And the Fourth Bell began its first slow toll.
