Chapter Nine
The Name Buried Before Creation
The library fell into a silence so deep that even fear seemed afraid to breathe.
Elias remained on his knees, clutching his head as fragments of impossible memories crashed through his mind.
They did not feel like dreams.
They felt like home.
He saw an endless kingdom bathed in living light, where rivers flowed like liquid crystal and mountains sang with voices older than creation. He stood among countless beings clothed in radiance, yet none looked upon him as a stranger.
They bowed.
Not to a king.
Not to a god.
But to him.
Then the vision shattered.
---
"Elias!"
Mara rushed to his side.
Blood trickled slowly from his ears.
His breathing became shallow.
His eyes remained open, but they no longer reflected the library.
They reflected another world.
Auren knelt before him and gently placed his small hand upon Elias's forehead.
"Come back," he whispered.
"You don't belong there yet."
The strange light faded from Elias's eyes.
He gasped violently and collapsed into Mara's arms.
"What... did I see?"
No one answered.
The Bell Keeper's face had become as pale as marble.
---
The ancient guardian slowly approached the Gate of First Shadows.
The enormous crimson eye was still watching.
Unblinking.
Waiting.
"You should never have spoken his forgotten title," the Bell Keeper said quietly.
The eye narrowed.
"I did not speak it."
"I merely reminded him."
Its voice rolled through the chamber like distant thunder.
"The truth always remembers itself."
---
The shattered fragments of the Bell Keeper's crystal staff suddenly began to glow.
One by one they rose from the floor.
Instead of returning to the broken staff, they gathered above Elias's head, spinning in a circle of silver light.
Auren watched silently.
"The staff has chosen."
The Bell Keeper closed his eyes.
"So it has."
"What does that mean?" Mara asked.
The old guardian answered with great reluctance.
"For ten thousand years, the Staff of Echoes has served only one guardian."
"It has never abandoned its master."
"Until today."
The silver fragments slowly descended.
Each piece disappeared into Elias's chest.
Not piercing his flesh.
Becoming part of him.
A brilliant light burst from within him.
Then vanished.
---
The library trembled again.
Thousands of books flew open at once.
Instead of words, their pages now displayed moving images.
Scenes from forgotten ages.
The birth of oceans.
The first tree.
The first lie.
The first act of mercy.
The first betrayal.
History was no longer written.
It was awakening.
Among the countless visions, one image appeared in every book.
A great city of light standing beneath a sky with two suns.
At its centre stood two young men.
One wore robes woven from silver flame.
The other wore robes of midnight blue.
They laughed together.
They embraced as brothers.
Then the image dissolved into fire.
---
Elias stared at the vision.
"I know them."
The Bell Keeper slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"You do."
"The one in silver..."
Elias whispered.
"...was me."
No one spoke.
The old guardian could not deny it.
"And the other?"
Auren lowered his head.
"The Hollow King."
A cold wave swept across the chamber.
"You were brothers."
---
"No..."
Elias staggered backwards.
"That's impossible."
"I've lived thirty-four years."
The Bell Keeper looked at him with profound sorrow.
"You have lived thirty-four years..."
"...this time."
The words struck like a hammer.
"What do you mean?"
"You have walked this world before."
"You have died before."
"You have been forgotten before."
"And each time..."
The Bell Keeper's voice broke.
"You chose to return."
---
The Gate of First Shadows began to laugh.
Its laughter echoed through every corridor of the endless library.
"He finally remembers."
The crimson eye fixed itself upon Elias.
"Tell them."
"Tell them why you buried your own name."
Elias clutched his head.
More memories surged forward.
He saw himself standing before the Hollow King.
Not as enemies.
As brothers.
Between them stood a child.
Auren.
The boy was smiling.
Then the sky split apart.
Darkness poured into the world.
Someone had to seal it.
Someone had to be forgotten.
Someone had volunteered.
"No..."
Elias whispered.
"It was me."
---
Auren's eyes filled with tears.
"You chose to carry the Forgotten Hour."
"So no one else would."
"You erased yourself from every memory..."
"...to imprison the darkness forever."
The Bell Keeper fell to one knee.
"Your sacrifice saved creation."
"But the prison has weakened."
"And now the memories are returning."
---
Suddenly, the entire library shook with violent force.
A deafening crack echoed above them.
The ceiling split open.
Far overhead, the shattered sky could be seen.
The falling stars had stopped.
In their place hung a vast circle of darkness.
It slowly turned.
Like the pupil of an eye.
Watching.
Waiting.
From its centre came a sound no human tongue could describe.
The awakened souls collapsed, covering their ears.
The books screamed.
Even the Gate of First Shadows became silent.
The Bell Keeper looked upward in horror.
"It has awakened."
Mara whispered,
"What has?"
The old guardian's voice trembled.
"The One who watched before light existed."
---
The Book of the Forgotten Hour burst open for what seemed like the final time.
Its pages no longer filled with ink.
Instead...
Letters of living fire carved themselves into the paper.
Every soul present read the same terrifying prophecy.
WHEN THE THIRD BELL RINGS...
THE FIRST WATCHER SHALL OPEN ITS EYES.
A second line appeared.
AND THE BROTHER MUST CHOOSE WHETHER TO REMEMBER...
OR TO SAVE THE WORLD ONCE MORE.
The fiery words faded.
Silence returned.
Then...
Somewhere beyond the broken heavens...
A massive bell began its first slow toll.
The Third Bell had started to ring.
Far above, hidden within the endless darkness, something opened one ancient eye.
And when it looked upon the world...
Every shadow on Earth turned and faced Elias Varen.
