Chapter Eight The Gate That Remembered His Name The knocking stopped. Silence settled over the Library Beneath Memory like a burial cloth. No one breathed. No one dared move. The colossal black door stood in the centre of the ancient chamber, its smooth surface absorbing every flicker of light. The words carved upon it seemed to deepen with every passing heartbeat. DO NOT OPEN WHAT REMEMBERS YOU. Then... A voice came from the other side. Soft. Broken. Familiar. "Elias..." His heart nearly stopped. It was impossible. He knew that voice. He had not heard it in more than twenty years. It belonged to his mother. --- "Elias, my son..." The voice trembled with warmth and sorrow. "I've been waiting for you." His knees weakened. "No..." He whispered. "No... this can't be real." He had buried his mother with his own hands. He remembered the rain. The flowers. The tears. She was gone. Yet every word beyond the door sounded exactly as she had when she tucked him into bed as a child. The same gentle tone. The same comforting tenderness. The same love. --- "Open the door." Her voice was almost a whisper. "I've missed you." Tears filled Elias's eyes. Every painful memory of losing her came rushing back. He took one hesitant step towards the gate. Another. Another. Mara seized his wrist. "Don't." Her voice shook. "It isn't her." Elias looked at her. "But... I know that voice." "So does the gate." --- The Bell Keeper planted his crystal staff upon the stone floor. "The Gate of First Shadows cannot create memories." "It steals them." "It searches every wound in your heart." "It speaks with the voice you trust the most." The voice beyond the door laughed softly. "You always were suspicious, old guardian." Then it changed. It became the voice of a little girl. A frightened child. "Father..." One of the awakened souls collapsed to his knees. "My daughter..." He stumbled towards the gate. The Bell Keeper raised his staff. A wall of silver light appeared before the door. The man slammed against it, sobbing uncontrollably. "Please..." "I just want to hear her again." --- The gate continued speaking. One by one. Every person heard a different voice. A lost husband. A forgotten wife. A childhood friend. A son who never returned from war. The library echoed with quiet weeping. The gate did not tempt through greed. It tempted through love. --- Auren slowly approached the door. Unlike everyone else, he showed no fear. "You still use sorrow as your key." The gate answered immediately. "Sorrow has never failed me." The child sighed. "You haven't changed." "I cannot." The voice became impossibly deep. "I remember everything." A chill swept through the chamber. The Bell Keeper bowed his head. "It knows." Mara frowned. "What does it know?" The old guardian answered without looking up. "It remembers the world before time." --- Suddenly, the inscription upon the gate began to glow. The ancient letters dissolved and were replaced by new words. THE WITNESS HAS RETURNED. The stone trembled. A narrow crack appeared down its centre. Golden light poured through the opening. Along with laughter. Children laughing. Birds singing. Church bells ringing. It sounded like paradise. Elias instinctively moved closer. The warmth pouring from the crack filled him with peace unlike anything he had ever known. He could almost see green fields beyond the opening. His childhood home. His parents smiling. A life untouched by grief. "Come home." His mother's voice returned. "There is no pain here." --- For one dangerous moment... Elias reached towards the opening. His fingertips were only inches away. Then... He noticed something. His mother's reflection appeared in the golden light. She was smiling. But... She had no shadow. His blood froze. He remembered Mara. She cast no shadow because her true name had been stolen. His mother had always cast one. "This isn't you." The smile beyond the crack widened. Far wider than any human mouth could. The warm golden light suddenly darkened. A thousand black hands burst from the opening. They lunged towards Elias. "NOW!" shouted the Bell Keeper. Mara pulled Elias backwards as the silver barrier erupted with blinding light. The black hands slammed against it, filling the chamber with a deafening shriek. The entire library shook violently. Books flew from their shelves. Columns cracked. The barrier began to splinter. --- Then Auren stepped forward. He placed his small hand upon the ancient door. "I remember your first name." The black hands froze. For the first time, fear echoed from beyond the gate. "No..." Auren closed his eyes. "You were not always called Shadow." The library fell silent. "You were once called..." Before he could finish, a violent blast of darkness exploded from the gate. It hurled everyone across the chamber. The Bell Keeper struck a stone pillar. His staff shattered into countless fragments. The silver barrier vanished. The great door burst open. Not completely. Only wide enough for one enormous crimson eye to peer through. It was larger than a carriage wheel. It slowly turned. Searching. Until it stopped... On Elias. The eye blinked once. Then spoke. "I remember your true name." Elias felt an unbearable pain inside his mind. A flood of memories—none of them his own—surged through him. He saw cities that had never existed. Kings crowned before the stars were born. A great war fought before the first sunrise. And standing at the centre of it all... He saw himself. Not as Elias Varen. But as someone else. Someone dressed in robes of living light. Someone every army feared. Someone the Hollow King called... "Brother." The vision shattered. Elias collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath. No one spoke. No one moved. The Bell Keeper's face filled with disbelief. Mara covered her mouth. Auren quietly wept. For the first time, they all realised the terrifying truth. Elias had not merely witnessed the Thirty-First Midnight. He had survived it once before. Long before the world had forgotten. End of Chapter Eight Next Chapter: The Name Buried Before Creation
