Chapter Eight

Riley What the hell had I done? Sipping my chai latte , the kind from a packet and not from my favourite coffee shop I eyed the open laptop on the small two seater table in my compact kitchen like it was some sort of monster. It was open but it wasn’t on. I couldn’t bring myself to turn it on. As soon as I did that it would make what I had done real. I hadn’t just made an epic fool of myself by falling I had flashed Elliot Davis’ perfect ass to the worlds media. Me. My career was done. Ruined… because of one stupid stumble. I hadn’t just failed I had crashed and burned. The chances that no one had caught it on camera were zilch. My phone beeping pulled me back to myself. Swallowing hard I gazed down at the small screen. Eighteen voicemails. And I knew deep down at least one of them was going to be from Marilyn my boss. The final nail in the coffin of my career. There was no way I could listen to that right now. Not before I was thoroughly caffeinated anyway. The phone rang once and I answered it automatically, cursing myself when my finger hit the little green button. Oh well. “Riley?” Breathing a sigh of relief I took a sip of the hot comforting spicy liquid. “Eve.” “Damn girl you kept that quiet .” “Kept what quiet?” Running my hand through the tangles in my thick hair. “You and mr hot ass America.” Eves throaty chuckle made my eyebrows shoot together. I had no idea what she was on about. “You’ve lost me.” “Why the hell are you going after Carl, if you could get your hands on Elliot Davis’ ass? And more importantly why didn’t you tell me?” “Eve.” I groaned. I was not awake enough to deal with this. “It was an accident, I can’t get my hands on his ass as you put it plus I love Carl.” I could almost hear her eyeroll over the phone. “You saying you don’t know him?” “That’s exactly what I’m saying.” I pinched at the bridge of my nose. “I smell BS . He said and I quote ‘Don’t you think you have grabbed my ass enough?’ And the way he looked at you? Damn girl you can’t tell me nothing has gone on between you two. He knew you. And I’m not the only one who has come to that conclusion. But hey keep your secrets even if I am meant to be your best friend” “Eve, honestly I’m not keeping secrets from you . I’m going to lose my job.” It just have been the desperation in my voice because she sighed heavily. “You won’t , I know you won’t. This is a good thing Riley, it could be a great thing if you just go for it. That guys eyes got positively swoon worthy when he looked at you. You can use that to your advantage.” “I gotta go, my messages are going crazy and I have to get ready for work.” The very thought of it was making my heart thud in my chest. “Ring me tonight , I want the details. All the details Riley. No excuses!” Eve ended the call without saying goodbye leaving me to stare at the phone in my hand. Whoa girl you have gone viral! And my newest comic is trending! Call me after work so we can catch up. I stared at Debbies text message. It had been sent over an hour ago so sometime around six am. Which meant she had no doubt been working all night. Steeling myself against what was I about to see I settled myself on the rickety chairman’s switched on the machine that was about to tell me just how screwed I was. And nothing could have prepared me. All the major news channels were running the story. Showing in HD quality my beetroot face as I looked up at Elliot with my hand still on his ass. They had captured every ounce of anger and amusement in his chiseled face as he stared down at me. The curl of his full lips. Social media was no better . My face was everywhere , my face and the most famous butt in America. But it was the polls that caught my attention the most and there was several of them. All of contemplating who exactly I was. Who is Elliot Davis’ mystery woman? Girlfriend. People thought I was his girlfriend which was all sorts of strange. What would a man like him want with a girl like me. It was absurd they even thought we could be dating. Another beep and I picked up my phone reluctantly. My office as soon as you get to the office. It didn’t say who it was from it didn’t need to. The ice queen had summoned me and I was screwed.
