“So this is your house?” Now we were here I was suddenly nervous, and I couldn’t even shuffle my feet in my heels. The whole way back in the back of the cab, he had held my hand, his thumb swiping back and forth over the back of it and the small gesture had made me feel comfortable.
But now we were here, and his hand was no longer holding mine, I felt out of place.
“My place is the city yes.” He paused, already several feet away. “Obviously you know I have a place on the lake as well.” His smile was charming. “Why are you standing there Riley? You can come in you know.”
I paused. Opening and closing my mouth like a fish . Why couldn’t I speak? “Would you like me to take my shoes off?” Even as I said it I wanted to give my forehead a slap. Who said things like that?
