Riley The scraping of someone’s chair as they stood up caused the endless chatter around the table to die down, almost like someone was going to make a speech. As I gazed up at the woman who had stood , a newspaper in one hand and a glass of golden champagne in the other, I had a feeling she was about to. Even though I didn’t really know her , she had been one of the ones who had totally blanked me during orientation. And yet here she was smiling at me like we were besties. “Can I have your attention please.” Her voice was high, slightly breathy from too much wine already.  We might be off the clock and now and technically celebrating but getting drunk in front of my boss was not a good idea.
