The miracle took place about a week later, in mid-May, though he didn’t know it as such yet. He was walking in the forest, figuring out which trees they should log this year for the next year’s firewood, when he heard a weird sound. It wasn’t quite a whine, nor was it a groan, but something told him it was trouble nevertheless. He listened closely, walking toward the sound whenever he thought he heard it, and cursed his too-weak senses.
