The Funny Thing About Birthdays...

1263 Words
And I am met with locks of chocolate hair, fierce brown eyes to match, set in a tanned face. She looks exactly like the photograph on the vanity, but just a bit older. I am betting the photo was from early high school and now they're around my age. She huffs a bit dramatically, a plume of hair rising and falling comically before she says, "Finally June, what took you so long?" "I-" I try to stutter out but my hand is grabbed as I am suddenly led down the hallway where both her and the man's footsteps retreated. Her hand is strong and warm, but her pull is gentle like a... a mother bear almost. She continues despite my silence, "This isn't like you to wake up so late, usually it's way harder to surprise you." The girl stops short, clicking her tongue, as I ask, "S-surprise me?" Her strong grasp breaks mine, and she looks at me with a big embarrassed grin "Ah... shoot I ruined the birthday surprise..." She says before walking down the stairs in front of me. I follow timidly. It's Juniper's birthday today too? Before I am met with a loud "SURPRISE!" I almost jump out of my skin at the shout, and look around stupidly. The tanned girl speaks up sheepishly, "Sorry, sorry guys I think I ruined it... I spilled the beans at the top of the stairs." She pushes back through the crowd in the large kitchen with a big stack of pancakes. Then a voice speaks up, it's the man's voice from this morning, "Really Esme , this is why we couldn't tell you, you tell her everything." Esme, so that's her name... I think before I examine the man who gave me that info. She snaps back while placing the pancakes on a large heavy wood table, "Well Zaiyne, I wouldn't have had to if you learned to wake her up properly!" She said smugly, hands on hips. Zaiyne, I think his name as I look him over. He is rather handsome, short dark raven hair and warm golden eyes that look like the most expensive treasure in the world. In contrast his skin is pure like fresh fallen snow, and he is made even more handsome by the almost office assistant vibes he gives off. He runs a hand through his hair, curving the locks that broke free around his temples and forehead back into place. He notices me staring for far too long, probably with a stupefied face, before I suddenly feel a pain in my head like something clawing to be set free. I grasp my skull as the pain overwhelms me, I start to feel faint and my knees buckle. I see the fear in those golden eyes before my vision fades, and I feel myself falling. A warm feeling embraces me and I feel like I never want to wake up. Like everything is where it is meant to be. "Juni?? Juniper???" A different voice calls out to me, and I blink back tears, the haze lifting from my eyes. I am met with blue eyes, so deep and blue like I am staring into the ocean, and they threaten to swallow me up as my breath catches in my throat. His wavy sandy blonde hair is brushed back over his head, causing his chisled features to stand out even more, like a statue in a museum come to life. He stands me up gently, his voice wrapping around me like a cashmere blanket, "You ok, Juni? You didn't have to fall for me that hard." He winks, and I blink, as if waking from the dream, my face flush as I am wrapped in the tan arms of Esme. "Oh, c'mon Aspen. June, you ok? C'mon sit down here and get some breakfast in you, I am sure you're just overwhelmed from last night..." Last night? I think to myself, as she ushers me to my seat and places me in it. She sits across from me, and a gorgeous dainty woman comes in, followed by a larger man. The woman is small and delicate, but stands with a commanding presence like a Queen. Her hair is warm brown, the sunlight showing hints of red in them as the curls cascade down her back and over her shoulders. She is gorgeous, her makeup done just right, her clothes neat and clean consisting of pressed black capri pants, a crisp button up shirt and matching blazer buttoned under her bust, with the sleeves rolled up just so, showing off her watch and other jewelry on her wrists and fingers. Her black heels click against the tile floor of the kitchen as she rushes to me her blue eyes showing concern, placing a hand to my forehead. "Baby, are you ok?" She clicks her tongue, "I told you you should be careful, the night before your 18th birthday takes a lot out of you..." The man, double the size of the woman, and looking like a ginger bear follows behind her, his short hair and ginger beard giving lumberjack vibes. He wears pressed black pants with a pressed off white button up with the most delicate brown stripes tucked into the belted pants. His beautifully expensive dress shoes make no sound as he glides over the distance between us in a few giant steps. He takes his place next to the woman, wrapping his large arm around her tiny shoulders, before reaching out to me to tuck a loose strand of orange hair behind my ears. His hands and wrists only decorated by an expensive looking watch and wedding band to match the woman. "Honey, give her a break." His laugh rumbles through his belly, giving me a warm comforting feeling of Santa and Christmas. "You remember how we were when we were that age." He raises a brow at the woman, giving her a knowing look, and she nudges him painfully, "Oh, Dear...." They share a knowing loving glance, and I realize... These must be her parents... Esme speaks up, "Mr. and Mrs. Brookes, you don't have to worry, she was fine during her run last night!" A man walks in, placing a hand on the back of Zaiyne, nodding at him. They definitely are related, as they look the spitting image of one another, the only difference is the knit brow and glasses. "Alpha, Luna, we have to get going." He says, motioning to his watch. Juniper's father and mother exchange glances before looking back at me. His warm voice speaks again, "Alright, pumpkin, we have to go." Her mom speaks up, "Eat well and don't over extert yourself. We will need you in top condition tonight." She leans down and gives me a gentle, loving kiss on the forehead, her dad placing a hand on my head before they both turn towards the man with glasses and begin to leave. Alpha...? Luna...? Those are weird names.... "Oh, and Esmerelda?" Says the Alpha, "You know what to do if she's not feeling better?" I look at him confused as Esme, or should I say Esmerelda, replies, "Yea, I will tell my mum now." Both parents only smile, before turning to leave, Juniper's mom blowing her one last kiss before she exits. I am jolted out of my thoughts by Esme. "C'mon Juni! You heard them, dig in!" She then says in a sing song voice, "It's your faaaavoriiiite~!" As she pushes a large stack of chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries and cream infront of me.
