Evelyn's blade sliced a several-centimeter cut across Ivy's arm.
The moment blood began to flow, Daniel had already pinned Evelyn to the ground.
The wound on her abdomen was pulled again, and a sharp pain shot through her body. Her vision went dark in waves.
"You attacked me on purpose. I'm calling the police," Ivy cried as she picked up her phone.
Daniel did not stop her. He did not say a single word.
The police arrived quickly.
As Evelyn was taken away with her arms twisted behind her back, Ivy leaned close to her ear and whispered,
"I remember your parents are buried at Eternal Rest Memorial Park. If you dare say anything in the police station, I'll make your parents' ashes end up just like your child's."
Evelyn shuddered violently. It felt as if her throat had been strangled and she could barely breathe.
She looked at the girl she had sponsored for four years, who had once seemed as delicate as a flower, and felt a chill run through her body.
She opened her mouth but said nothing, allowing the police to take her away.
In the end, because Ivy's injury was minor, Evelyn was detained for ten days.
When Daniel came to see her, complicated emotions churned in his eyes.
"I already helped you get the lightest punishment possible."
Evelyn looked up, a bitter smile on her lips.
"You managed to get a r****t's sentence reduced so he was released in less than five years. I only caused her a small injury. With your ability, I still have to sit here for ten days?"
Daniel frowned, his tone hurried and evasive.
"I did everything I could. This won't leave a criminal record. Don't worry. Just treat it like postpartum confinement."
Postpartum confinement.
Those three words stabbed into her heart.
She instinctively covered her lower abdomen. The wound there still had not healed, and it throbbed faintly, constantly reminding her that she had just given birth.
How could he say something like "postpartum confinement in prison" so casually?
The last trace of hope in her heart completely disappeared.
"Leave. I don't want to see you again," she said wearily, turning her back to him.
Daniel was silent for a moment before speaking quietly.
"You used to be kind and gentle. Now you're impulsive and jealous. Just take this time inside to reflect. Life still has to go on. When you get out, I hope you'll have thought things through."
Evelyn murmured softly, "I already have. I'm divorcing you and leaving you forever."
"What did you say?" he asked, not hearing clearly.
At that moment, his phone rang.
He answered it, and Ivy's coquettish voice came through the receiver.
"Husband, I want some cake. When are you coming back?"
Daniel quickly covered the phone and lowered his voice. "I'll be at the office soon. I'll definitely win this case for you."
After hanging up, he glanced at Evelyn's stiff back and said coldly,
"I have work to do. I'll pick you up when you're released."
Evelyn turned around and laughed coldly. "Busy with what? Buying her cake? Or applying medicine to the wound on her arm that's about to heal?"
Exposed by her words, Daniel's face flushed red. He called a prison guard over and said sternly,
"Officer, my wife is spoiled and unruly. She injured someone with a knife. Please discipline her properly so she understands her mistake and won't harm society again after she gets out."
At a single look from him, the guard immediately understood and replied solemnly,
"We'll make sure she gets special attention."
Daniel walked out the door, leaving behind a cold sentence.
"Take care of yourself."
He never looked back.
Because of his instructions, she received plenty of special attention.
While she was showering, the hot water suddenly turned freezing. Her body, still weak after childbirth, could not bear it and she developed a high fever.
After dragging her weak body through a full day of manual labor, she went to the cafeteria, only to find a single cold steamed bun left.
Several of the dominant inmates beat her over a trivial matter.
Only after she was bleeding did the guards slowly arrive and disperse them.
The special attention lasted for ten full days.
During yard time, Evelyn overheard several guards chatting about Richard.
"I heard Richard has a strange obsession. He especially likes women wearing red dresses. Supposedly his first love always wore red dresses and dumped him. It messed him up pretty badly."
Evelyn's entire body stiffened. Her blood seemed to freeze instantly.
The day Daniel sent her to Shaw Industries to deliver documents, she happened to be wearing the red dress he had given her.
All the doubts suddenly connected into a single line that tightened around her heart and left her unable to breathe.
Had he already begun plotting against her back then?
The thought chilled her to the bone.
Curled up on the hard prison bed, Evelyn finally broke down and cried quietly.
How she wished all of this were false. How she wished their love had not been so unbearable.
"Daniel, if I find the evidence, you won't escape punishment."
