One week later.
Inside her room at the postpartum care center, Evelyn opened the envelope sent by the private investigator. Her fingers felt ice cold.
Before Richard went to prison, he had not known that Daniel belonged to the Vaughn family.
By sheer coincidence, he had offered his family's resources in exchange for a favor, asking the Vaughn family to find and take care of his illegitimate daughter Ivy who had been living outside.
So that was the truth.
Evelyn clenched the papers so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
What she believed to be justice had actually been a transaction.
For four years she had personally funded the daughter of the man who destroyed her life. She had invited a wolf into her home and caused the death of her own child.
Her stomach churned violently. She rushed into the bathroom and retched, but only sour bile came out.
Curled up on the bathroom floor, she suddenly remembered the moment she woke up in the hospital five years ago.
His eyes had been red as he held her hand and said, "I will definitely bring them to justice."
Aside from gathering evidence and attending court hearings, he had spent all his time taking care of her.
The wounds on her body left by the assault had been so severe that the flesh had rotted.
He would not even let the nurses handle them. Every time he personally applied medicine.
"Evelyn is afraid of pain. They aren't gentle enough."
For a full year after their marriage, he patiently stayed by her side and helped her slowly step out of the shadows.
All their friends said Daniel was the perfect husband.
But now she realized that even that kindness had been mixed with selfish motives.
She staggered downstairs, desperate for the cold wind to cool the fury inside her chest.
Just then, a figure she would never forget brushed past her.
Richard, dressed in luxury brands with a cigar in his mouth, he swaggered over and even slapped her butt.
"I heard you lost your baby. But I'm about to become a father again. I got early release."
Evelyn trembled violently. It felt as if every drop of blood in her body had frozen.
He had been released early? And he was going to be a father again?
Then what about her child?
Her baby who had been born without a breath, who had ultimately become four grams of ashes?
Her reason vanished, replaced by overwhelming hatred as she lunged at Richard.
Suddenly a hand clamped over her mouth from behind and dragged her into an elevator.
When she saw that it was Daniel, a chill ran through her entire body.
He shoved her into a car, locked the doors, and the vehicle sped away.
Evelyn gasped for breath and stared at him.
"Why is he here?"
Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel. After a long silence he finally answered, "He showed good behavior and got a sentence reduction. He was released early."
Good behavior? Sentence reduction?
Evelyn felt like she had heard the most absurd joke in the world.
"He allowed multiple men to violate me. He was sentenced to fifteen years. It's only been five. I won't let him go. I'm sending him back to prison."
Her hands trembled as she took out her phone and dialed the police.
But before she could speak, Daniel suddenly grabbed the phone, turned it off, and threw it into the back seat.
"What are you doing?" Evelyn screamed.
Daniel roared, "Evelyn, if you reopen the case, what happens to my reputation in the legal world? I fought for everything I have today. Every step came from my own effort. Do you want to ruin me?"
The car screeched to a halt outside the villa.
He dragged her out of the car.
During the struggle, the wound on her abdomen tore open. A sharp pain shot through her body as warm blood seeped out.
Daniel felt the blood on his hand and his expression changed. He hurriedly fetched the first aid kit.
Kneeling beside her, his eyes reddened when he saw the wound.
"I'm sorry, honey." His voice choked, and the hand holding the cotton swab trembled.
"I didn't mean to hurt you. I was just afraid you'd act impulsively."
Looking at his affectionate expression, Evelyn only felt fear. He seemed terrifying and completely unfamiliar.
"So your reputation and your family's reputation matter, but the humiliation I suffered doesn't?" she said coldly. "Daniel, you were the one who promised you would never let them go."
Daniel nodded urgently. "I know. That's why I've been compensating you all these years."
"What's going on?"
In the middle of their argument, Ivy came downstairs sleepily.
When she saw Evelyn staring angrily at her pajamas, she covered her mouth in surprise.
"Sorry, Evelyn. It rained yesterday and I didn't have any dry pajamas, so I borrowed yours. You don't mind, do you?"
Clutching her wound, Evelyn asked word by word, "Daniel, is this what you call compensation?"
Daniel's face stiffened. "Our problems shouldn't involve Ivy. She's still a child."
At that moment, Evelyn's heart completely died.
She suddenly pushed Daniel away and tried to call the police again.
Just then Ivy spoke lazily once more.
"Evelyn, take a look. What is this?"
Evelyn instinctively turned around.
Her face instantly turned deathly pale.
