*Chapter 4: A Glimpse of Vulnerability* As the days went by, Ava and Marcus's relationship continued to evolve. They would have dinner together, exchanging stories and getting to know each other. Ava found herself looking forward to these moments, enjoying Marcus's company despite his reserved nature. One evening, as they sat in the dining room, Marcus seemed more relaxed than usual. Ava noticed a faint scar above his eyebrow and asked, "How did you get that?" Marcus's gaze dropped, and for a moment, Ava thought she saw a flash of pain. "It's a souvenir from the war," he said, his voice low. Ava's curiosity got the better of her. "What happened?" she asked gently. Marcus hesitated, then began to speak, his voice measured. "I was caught in an ambush. We were outnumbered, and...it was chaos." Ava listened, entranced, as Marcus recounted the events. She saw the vulnerability in his eyes, the weight of his memories. "I'm sorry," she said softly. "That must have been terrifying." Marcus's gaze met hers, and for a moment, Ava saw a glimmer of gratitude. "It's not something I like to think about," he said. "But thank you for listening." Ava smiled, feeling a sense of connection with him. "I'm here for you, Marcus," she said. "Whenever you need to talk." Marcus's expression softened, and he reached out, his hand closing around hers. "Thank you, Ava," he said. "You're...different." Ava raised an eyebrow. "Different?" Marcus nodded. "Most people wouldn't ask, wouldn't care. But you...you listen." Ava's heart skipped a beat as she met his gaze. She felt a spark of connection, a sense that maybe, just maybe, this marriage wouldn't be so bad after all.
