Chapter 6The families of Bannack who had children and a little bit of money wasted no time finding a cabin for the new school now that they had a schoolteacher, and soon Dez, Andrew and the Kirkpatrick boys, James and Robert, were spending their days scratching out lessons on a handheld chalkboard. Jane found herself at loose ends with her friends so occupied. Ma was still on her best behavior, so she did not have to watch Lana during the day as she had had to in the weeks leading up to their overnight stay with the Ferguses. Pa's fortunes still varied as much as before. Some days he would come home with a load of beans and flour and bacon from the store, and then some days they went hungry.
