Chapter 15At breakfast the next morning, distant shouts floated to the Canary cabin from the direction of town. Jane jumped to the door and peered out. “They're back,” she said. “Who's back?” asked Ma. “The Masons.” “Get dressed and see,” said Pa. Jane jumped into her second and third layers of clothes and hurried out the door. It was a grim group of Masons that sauntered back into town. They were twenty slouching, haggard men surrounding three prisoners on horseback: Weasel-Snout, Glass-Eye, and Lefty. John Innis trailed, leading Lo's mule, Black Bess. Evidently, word had been sent ahead by the group, because a crowd was already gathering in front of the unfinished building in which the trio of pie-eating friends had conjectured the day before.
