CHAPTER 4

“What happened, where am I?” Layla slowly opened her eyes, blinking in confusion as she found herself lying in a hospital bed. The bright lights and sterile smell of the room made her realize she was in a hospital. She tried to sit up, but her head throbbed with a dull ache, and her body felt weak. “Careful there Layla” Peter said in a concerned tone. “You blacked out.” Just then, a doctor walked in with a warm smile on her face approaching the bed where she was lying, "Good morning, Sarah," Dr. Johnson greeted her kindly. "I heard you had a little episode. How are you feeling now?" Sarah blinked, trying to gather her thoughts. "I... I'm not sure. I woke up here and I have no idea what happened." The doctor nodded understandingly. "That can be quite disorienting. Based on your symptoms, it seems like you experienced a temporary loss of consciousness. We call it a blackout." Sarah's eyes widened with curiosity. "But why did it happen? I've never had anything like this before." Dr. Johnson sat down beside her and explained the possible cause of her blacking out. Sarah listened attentively, her mind racing with questions."Could it be something more serious?" "While blackouts can be alarming, they are often not a cause for immediate concern. However, we'll need to run some tests to determine the underlying cause and ensure your well-being. We'll check your blood pressure, review any medications you're taking” the doctor said while making her way out of the ward. Sarah nodded, feeling a sense of relief knowing "Thank you, Dr.” Layla said. “I can't remember a thing” She touched her head, trying to remember what happened. “And my bills? How am…am...” she stuttered fighting back the tears that was making its way down to her cheeks “Heyyy, calm down what matters is you're alright, the bills have been sorted out too” “Omg Pete, I'm sorry I put you through this, I promise I'll pay you back soon as I get my paycheck” “Uhmm that wasn't me” “What do mean it wasn't you,” she asked weakly, demanding an answer. “don't look at me that way, I'm not allowed to say a thing but okay fine. Jeeezzz.” Well, Sebastian kinda saw you when you blacked out so he did basically everything himself without calling any attention. We came here together but he left, he didn't want you to know that he was involved but now you know and disclaimer, you didn't hear a thing from” Peter warned. “You've got to be kidding” she face palms. “Can I ask for a favor?” Pete asked pleadingly Then proceeded without response from Layla expect the confused stare accompanied by a slow nod. “I’m begging you with everything in me, please Layla, don't let Sebastian know that I shared the last piece of information with you, he will dismiss me, literally, and mannnn this is my only career and I'm not joking.” He stressed the last few words in a fake British accent. *** “Weren't you informed to take a week off?” Sebastian who was making his way toward his office stopped abruptly after sighting Layla through the transparent glass of Layla’s office. Sebastian had taken a liking to corporate jobs since his dad never really wanted him to do anything else. His parent's divorce coupled with his dad's retirement didn't stand in his way of taking over the family’s “legacy and he was great at it. he demolished and restructured the entire large building, The walls now gleamed with fresh paint in soothing colors. The polished hardwood floors reflected the warm glow of delicate chandeliers. Each office was adorned with elegant furniture, creating a professional yet inviting atmosphere, Intricately carved wooden tables, showcased beautiful decor pieces. The air carried the scent of polished wood, creating a serene atmosphere. It was a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication." “I took two weeks off as you said I should, I mean Peter told me so” she said. “Was that enough?” he inquired uninterestingly Layla was not expecting him to ask that, she pondered upon the fact that on some days he was nice, and other days he was being an ass. “Money won't grow legs and stop by my house if I don't work for it so yes it was enough”. Layla said sarcastically. “Thank you fo…” she stopped talking, taking into consideration all that Peter said in the hospital. ‘I'd rather not say it, wouldn't want to put Peter’s job in jeopardy, he sure looks like a possessed one on some days, so not today Satan’ she thought. “Thank you…. for the…. break” she stuttered. “Yeah, Peter told me what happened, maybe you should try to be more careful next time,” he said, making no attempt to look at her while slowly walking away from her office. “Told or you were there? asshole” she cursed under her breath then went back to her desktop reluctantly. *** Work was going quite smoothly for Layla, with little touches of drama in between. Sebastian had been away for two weeks for the business trip he had Layla make arrangements for. “Hey, wanna go grab some fooooo, hey, you good? you look pale” Peter who was peering through the half-opened door with a mischievous smile on his face forced the smile away from his face when he realized Layla wasn't looking okay. “ I know, I know. I’m really just exhausted, and nothing else” she sighed. “And I was about taking my leave so byeee Pete. see you next week. She was about leaving when she stood still suddenly remembering how she had been mean to Peter a few days ago. Feeling a pang of guilt, she mustered the courage to apologize. “It’s fine, Layla, it was one of those days,” Peter said with a big grin. Layla pulled Peter in for a tight hug before heading out of the building. She walked out of the office building, lost in her thoughts. As she crossed the street, her mind still preoccupied, she failed to notice an approaching car. Suddenly, screeching tires and a loud crash filled the air. Layla’s body was laying almost lifelessly on the ground, surrounded by concerned bystanders. Pain shot through her leg as she tried to move. She tried to speak, but her voice came out shaky. Her words became slurry and her vision blurry. Peter who was aware of the scene because of the commotion caused outside rushed out of the office, and took her the hospital. *** Welcome back Layla, a doctor said to her with a wide smile on her face. With the same expression, the doctor gave Layla a long pep talk. It's important to be aware that stressful events, like the accident you just experienced, can have an impact on the baby's well-being. It's crucial to take care of yourself and minimize stress as much as possible." “Wait, did you say baby?” she asked shockingly. “ yes Layla, you’re three weeks pregnant” “Were you unaware of this?” Layla’s mind raced as she tried to process the information.
