The Run

CHAPTER 19 KIERAN’S POV The moment her fingers brushed my chest, it was like lightning splitting the sky. A feeling of warmth and purity flooded through me, burning away the curse’s hold like paper in a flame. My bones cracked, my flesh retracted and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, I was myself again. Human! Breathing freely without a nose clump. Naked completely and felt ashamed. I curled into myself on the floor and tried to avoid eye contact with either of them. The cold air bit at my bare skin, but worse was the weight of Selene’s gaze. Her eyes were wide open and she looked shocked. Knowing scorched through me. I couldn’t bear it. The filth of what I’d become, the blood on my hands, the beast I’d been reduced to. It was all too much... And so, I decided to run. The second my legs obeyed me, I didn't think twice, I bolted. The world blurred. Trees whipped past, branches clawing at my arms, the wood floor rough beneath my bare feet. I didn’t care. I just needed to get away from her, from Logan’s sneering face, from the wreckage of what I was. But then, Her voice! It was soft and lilting, like a breeze through wind chimes—delicate and impossible to ignore. It shattered my senses like glass. My chest quaked violently, each breath a battle against the chaos inside me. My lungs burning, I wanted to stop and catch a breath but her footsteps pounded behind me, relentless. She was chasing me. Why? After everything, after seeing me like that, why wouldn’t she let me go for a while? "Please!" she cried again, closer now. "Just stop!" She whimpered Every instinct screamed to keep running, to spare myself and her the disgrace of what I'd become. But something deeper... something wild and desperate clawed its way up my throat and my legs felt weak. I skidded to a halt, spinning to face her just as she crashed into me. Her hands gripped my arms, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The moonlight caught in her eyes, bright and fierce. "You don’t get to run from me" she panted. "Not again" she muttered panting hard. My throat tightened. "Selene!" Behind her, the forest erupted with noise—Lira’s sharp voice, Logan’s furious curses, and Mira her long-time friend. They were coming. But for one heartbeat, it was just us. Her touch still burned where she held me. Her scent—wildflowers and steel. Wrapped around me like a lifeline. And for the first time in years, the beast inside me became quiet. Then Logan’s mocking laugh cut through the night. "How touching!" Selene whirled, stepping in front of me like a shield almost as if she was covering my exposed body as Lira burst into the clearing, her eyes flashing between us, but Logan just smirked. "Pathetic" he spat. "You’d rather die human than go back in the form of that horrible beast you were a couple of minutes ago" He muttered with a grin and I bared my teeth. "You're the pathetic one here. So empty without a spear in your hand. What does that speak of you?" I fumed at him, clenching my fist and his grin vanished. Lira stepped forward, her voice low. "Kieran, the curse, it broken. Do you understand what that means?" I did. And it terrified me. Because if Selene’s touch had shattered the curse’s hold... then the legends and prophecy were true. She was my fated mate. And my father did everything to just separate us. Perhaps, he'd known what I would become with her by my side. Selene turned back to me, her fingers brushing my jaw. "You’re not getting away this time. Not that easily" she whispered rolling her eyes. The beast in my chest lay still, silent—not a snarl, not a stir. For a moment, I wondered if it was peace or the calmness her presence brought to me. Did she remember the past she bled through, the betrayal that broke us? And if she did… had she forgiven me? Or worse—had she buried it so deep that it no longer mattered to her at all? The uncertainty gnawed at me, cruel and unrelenting RATHGAR’S POV The moment Cyrus agreed to my terms, I knew I had made a mistake. Not because I regretted bargaining for Selene’s freedom.... no, that was the only thing that felt right in this entire cursed situation. But because of the look in her eyes when I promised to bring Kieran’s head… it shattered something inside her. Disbelief! Betrayal! Hurt! And the worst part? She didn’t even fight it. She just accepted it—like she had expected nothing less from me. I felt ashamed, though that was the only thing I thought would be right to do for her. She doesn't deserve to die in Cyrus's dungeon. Perhaps, Kieran's head meant nothing **** It's been five days since we started the search for Kieran Ironfeng and it was looking like a dead end. The forest was silent. Too silent! My warriors had scoured every inch of the northern woods, tracking every rumor, every whisper of Kieran’s whereabouts. Nothing. It was as if the bastard had vanished into thin air. Ezra crouched beside a broken branch, her fingers tracing the faint imprint of a paw in the mud. "He was here" she murmured. "Recently" "You have to stop kidding, it's not funny being in here. Okay!" Dain fumed at her "I'm serious, serious. Come see!" She said. Dain scoffed, kicking at the dirt. "That doesn’t help us if we can’t find him" Their drama was less important to me as my thoughts were something different. Cyrus’s patience was wearing thin. The message he had sent earlier had been clear: "Three days have come and gone, Rathgar! Where is Kieran’s head? Or do I need to remind you what happens to those who break deals with me?" I didn’t need a reminder. I knew exactly what Cyrus did to traitors, to failures. And now, Selene was caught in the middle of it. The most annoying part of it was another letter that came in from Cyrus that morning reading that I had come and broke Selene free from the dungeon. How could I have done that while I have been in this dead woods searching? How could I have broken my promise to Cyrus when I had the knowledge of what the repercussions would be? My fingers curled into fists. I should never have left her there! I should have done exactly what I'm being accused of and await the consequences. Cyrus is just too devilish to deal with but I had a plan. I will clear my name, take Kieran to him and take Selene and Lira back to the pack. Ezra stood, dusting off her hands. "We’re wasting time. If Kieran’s not here, we need to check the eastern ridges." I didn’t move. Dain frowned. "Alpha?" "Enough" I growled. "We’re done hunting." Ezra’s eyes widened. "What?" "Why, what's the plan?" Dain asked with curiosity.
