Chapter 6

By the time she dragged her water-soaked body back home, Chris and Kaye had just finished their sordid, reckless tryst. Not long after, a new post popped up on "Animal World" website's personal column. Kaye had uploaded a photo of the two with their fingers laced tightly together, set against the background of a messy unmade bed. The image looked calm on the surface, but it burned like acid, a wordless brag about the intimacy they stole right from under her nose. A: [Congratulations to Mr. Rabbit for defeating Mr. White Cat, and winning back Miss Fox's heart!] Kaye also posted a comment. Miss Fox: [To make it up to me, Mr. Rabbit is taking me on a trip! He's all mine the whole time. Stay tuned for more updates!] The comment section was already packed with onlookers gushing over how cute the couple was. The wild, celebrating vibe only made the empty house around Rose feel even colder, lonelier, and more desolate. Rose's heart felt as barren as a dead desert. All that was left was the biting, numbing ache that settled deep in her bones. The huge, spacious house was dead silent and empty. Her fiancé, the man who was supposed to be hers, hadn't come home all night. Another whole day dragged by in dead silence. Kaye didn't stop posting on her social media, every single update dripping with her sweet new daily life with Chris. Chris took her all over, sightseeing and traveling, bought her fancy luxury cars and designer watches, and spoiled her rotten. When their Ferris wheel car reached the very top, they kissed wrapped in each other's arms, and Kaye posted that photo for everyone to see, shouting their relationship from the rooftops without a single shred of shame. When night fell, the two of them went live-streaming together with their masks still on, twisting into all kinds of provocative poses to entertain their viewers. They laid their filthy, private moments bare for the whole world to gawk at. Rose curled up on her cold, unused bed. Her temples throbbed with sharp, stabbing pangs, and a heavy, dull ache rolled over her body again and again. The aftereffects of the car crash she'd been in earlier had never fully gone away. The doctor had warned her her brain had blocked blood vessels, that she couldn't get stressed, couldn't stay up late, and that the only thing to do when a headache hit was rest quietly to let it pass. But Chris had never cared about her pain, never paid any mind to her suffering. Right this second, he was off with another woman, living it up in pure bliss. Suddenly, a voice notification popped up on her phone. It was from Chris. His voice was soft and sweet, exactly the same tender, doting tone he'd always used with her. "Rose, I'm still out of town on a business trip. I'll be back soon. I even picked up a good luck charm for you. Just wait for me at home like a good girl, okay?" The very second that voice message hit her phone, Kaye posted a brand-new photo to her feed. The picture showed a prenatal test form from the hospital, with Kaye's slim fingertip resting lightly on her small belly. Her caption was short and cutting: Right on schedule. Every single word was blatant, unmasked provocation and bragging, thrown straight in Rose's face. Rose tugged the corner of her mouth up into a bitter, hollow laugh. The whole thing was so absurd, so bitterly ridiculous that she almost wanted to laugh out loud. Even now, Chris was still putting on this act of being a devoted, one-woman man. He truly thought she was still in the dark, completely clueless about everything. Right when her chest ached heavy with despair, a private message popped up on her phone from Kaye. Kaye: Rose, let's meet up when you have time. Rose didn't make any excuses. She showed up right when they agreed. In the quiet, minimalist coffee shop, the two women sat across from each other at a small table, the air between them thick, stagnant, and awkward. Kaye kept her face calm, but her eyes hid a thick, lingering resentment. She broke the silence first. "I'm pregnant, but Chris wants me to get rid of the baby. What do you think I should do?" Rose's voice was cold and completely flat, not a ripple of emotion. "You should ask him that question, not me." Kaye went quiet for a long moment. All the soft warmth in her gaze melted away, leaving nothing but ice and obsession behind. "Quit playing dumb. You saw everything that night outside the villa, didn't you? I'm carrying Chris' baby. I know what we're doing is wrong, but you can't control who you fall in love with. When the feeling hits, no one can stop it." Rose lifted her eyes, stared right at her, and quietly voiced the question that had been weighing on her chest for ages. "Why did you hire someone to run me over with a car? The three of us grew up together. You always protected me back then, you never hurt me even once." Those words stabbed right at Kaye's biggest sore spot. Her eyes darted wildly, and she completely lost her composure, her voice shook with hysterical madness. "I didn't want to hurt you! I just wanted to scare you! You already have all of Chris' love! You have his name, the engagement, every single person's blessing! You already have so much! All I want is a baby that belongs to me and him. Why won't he even give me that?!" she exclaimed. "Let's make a bet." Kaye stared hard at Rose, her gaze sharp with obsessive stubbornness, "Bet who Chris will pick in the end, you or me. If he picks you, I'll walk away on my own, get rid of the baby without a fuss, and disappear from both of your lives for good. But if he picks me... Rose, do me a favor and let us be together gracefully." Rose drew in a deep breath, her gaze holding nothing but dead, empty desolation. "Kaye, there's no need to bet. He had already made his choice a long time ago—" The words were barely out of her mouth when a massive, deafening explosion ripped through the coffee shop's back kitchen! Flames burst upward in an instant, thick black smoke rolled through the entire dining hall in seconds. Searing hot air came blasting straight toward them, shattered chunks of building material and glass went flying everywhere. Every diner in the café erupted into blind panic, screaming as they scrambled for the exits. The surging, chaotic crowd triggered a stampede, and the whole place spiraled completely out of control. Rose's heart jolted. She lifted her eyes to the crazed woman sitting across from her and demanded, "Did you do this? You'd cause this much chaos just for an answer? You'd get all these people killed?" Desolation pooled deep in Kaye's eyes, her tone sharp with the do-or-die obsession that had consumed her. "I have no other way out. I have to get my answer." Almost everyone had already fled the building, but Kaye clamped her hand around Rose's wrist in a bruising, vice-like grip, refusing to let her move an inch. Kaye was taller, and far stronger than Rose. No matter how hard Rose twisted and fought, she couldn't break free. The flames roared higher and higher, thick acrid smoke clawing at their lungs, making it impossible to breathe, turning their heads light and sending waves of suffocation washing over them. Boom! Another deafening explosion shook the entire building. Shards of broken glass and crumbling construction debris came crashing down like a tidal wave. A sharp slice of jagged material tore straight through Kaye's upper arm, and blood immediately soaked through her sleeve. In this life-or-death moment, a hurried figure burst through the thick wall of smoke, rushing straight toward them. It was Chris. His eyes locked onto the chaos in an instant, and he charged into the raging inferno without a second thought. The first person his gaze landed on was the bleeding, injured Kaye. He strode toward her without hesitation, wrapped his hand tight around hers, his face bone-white, twisted with raw panic and worry. "Are you insane? Who told you to pull this stupid stunt?" Kaye knit her brows in agony, a low whimper slipping past her lips. "My arm… it hurts so bad…" In that second, Chris completely lost his head. He didn't spare a single thought for Rose, still trapped in mortal danger right behind him. He wrapped his arms tight around Kaye and turned straight for the exit. Not once the whole time did he glance back at her. "Chris!" Rose called out, her voice shaking, clinging to the last shred of hope she had left. Chris' body went rigid. His footsteps froze, and he finally, reluctantly looked back. But all she could see in his eyes was guilt and irritation. "Why did you leave the house? Who told you to come chasing after me?" No sooner had the words left his mouth than another pained groan rumbled from Kaye, scattering all his thoughts completely. Chris wrenched his gaze away from Rose instantly, every ounce of his attention fixed on the injured woman in his arms. He brushed her off with a throwaway, half-hearted line, "Rose, take care of yourself. I'm taking her to the hospital first. I'll send my assistant to pick you up later." All Chris could see was the shallow scratch on Kaye's arm. It never crossed his mind that, amid the swirling smoke and flying debris, Rose's back was already covered in tiny embedded glass shards. Her clothes were soaked completely with blood, searing pain wracked her entire body, and she was already covered in wounds all over. Rose stumbled out of the burning café on unsteady legs. The sun blazed bright and scorching outside. Even though its golden light should have wrapped around her in warmth, it couldn't melt the ice that had already frozen solid in the center of her chest. When passersby on the street caught sight of her state, shocked gasps ripped from their throats one after another. "Oh my god! Her back is covered in glass, she's losing so much blood!" "Call 911 right now! She's not gonna make it if we don't hurry!" The chaotic shouts of the crowd muffled as they reached her ears. Rose's face drained of every last trace of color, her knees buckled, and she crumpled straight down onto the cold, hard pavement. The world around her buzzed with chaos, people scrambling to get to safety, but she might as well have been entirely alone. Cast aside by the whole world, she lay broken and helpless, unable to move an inch. In the split second before her consciousness faded completely for good, the last image that burned into her vision was Chris' resolute, retreating back as he carried Kaye away.
