Chapter 20 Navigating the steep slope of Windlass Hill was a struggle. Matthew, Amos, and Hiram chained the wheels of their wagons while others tied a small tree to the back, adding weight to slow the vehicles down. Others hoisted emptied wagons down the steep-pitched peak with ropes while children moved belongings from one side to the next. Some of the wives helped with the strenuous work of pushing and pulling when there was no one else to do it. I was so exhausted by the end, as was Willie.
