The Call That Changed Everything

557 Words
The rain had finally stopped. Small puddles shimmered beneath the streetlights as Ava and Noah walked side by side, neither of them in a hurry to say goodbye. For the first time since he’d transferred to Westbrook High, Noah looked… lighter. Not completely happy. But lighter. “So,” Ava said, kicking a pebble along the sidewalk, “I guess we’re officially friends now.” Noah glanced at her. “I guess we are.” She smiled. “You’re smiling again.” “I am not.” “The corners of your mouth literally moved.” “They twitched.” She laughed. “That’s still progress.” For a moment, everything felt normal. The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable anymore. It was peaceful. As they reached the intersection where their paths split, Noah stopped walking. “This is me.” Ava nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” He hesitated. “…Yeah.” Then His phone vibrated. The smile disappeared instantly. The screen glowed in the darkness. Dad. Noah stared at it without answering. The phone rang again. And again. Ava noticed the color drain from his face. “You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.” “I do.” His voice was barely above a whisper. He accepted the call. “…Hello?” Even from where she stood, Ava could hear the shouting. Noah didn’t speak for several seconds. “I know.” “…I’m on my way.” “…I’m sorry.” He lowered the phone. His hand was trembling. “What happened?” Ava asked softly. “My dad…” He swallowed. “He wants me home. Now.” Something about the way he said it made Ava’s chest tighten. “Are you okay?” Noah forced a small smile. “I’ll be fine.” She wanted to believe him. She really did. Instead, she stepped forward and gently took his hand. His fingers were ice cold. “You don’t always have to say you’re fine.” For a second… Noah looked as if he might cry. But just as quickly, he looked away. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Without another word, he walked off into the darkness. Ava watched until he disappeared around the corner. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. ⸻ That night, Ava couldn’t sleep. She kept thinking about Noah’s bruises. His father. The fear in his eyes. At 11:47 p.m., her phone buzzed. An unknown number. She frowned before opening the message. Thank you… for today. No name. No emoji. Just seven words. She smiled. Then typed back. You don’t have to thank your friends. Get some sleep. Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Finally Goodnight, Ava. She stared at the screen longer than she meant to. It was the first time Noah had ever used her name. ⸻ The next morning… Noah’s desk was empty. Mrs. Bennett looked toward the class. “Mr. Hayes won’t be joining us today.” Ava’s stomach dropped. Emma leaned over. “Maybe he’s sick?” Ava nodded. But something told her… It wasn’t that simple. Across town, Noah sat silently in the waiting room of a hospital. His hands were stained with dried blood. A nurse called his name. “Noah Hayes?” He stood. And followed her through the doors. Without knowing… His life had just changed forever.
