Chapter 4

4 As the lady stepped out of the airplane, her smile radiant, my heart sank. She was drop-dead gorgeous, with curves that seemed to defy gravity. I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as she hugged Cassian. Not that I cared about her relationship with Cassian, I could hardly care about their relationship, I was jealous that my body would never look like that. "I have missed you," she said, her voice soft and melodic. I watched in silence as Cassian returned her hug, his expression softening at her touch. She was everything I wasn't – curvy, shapely, with big breasts that drew attention wherever she went. Compared to her, I felt small and insignificant, my slender frame paling in comparison. I had expected her to be his mistress, but the way Cassian looked at her told me otherwise. "This is Jennifer. You may be queen in name, but she is my real queen. You are to show her respect. Do not cause drama," Cassian said sternly, before walking away with her, leaving me to follow like a maid. Inside the plane, Jennifer couldn't resist taking a jab at me. "She is better than Lavina. Do you even know her name?" she remarked to Cassian, who simply shook his head in response. They disappeared into a separate room, leaving me to sit alone in silence. I couldn't help but wonder about Lavina. Had she known about Cassian mistress? Did she reach the same conclusion I had – that she couldn't bear this life anymore? As I sat there, tears welled up in my eyes. I had no answers, only questions. But at least I would no longer be maltreated. Someone would treat me as a queen, even if it meant being alone. I thought about Cole and his love for me, his words echoing in my mind. "You are mine, will always be mine." But now, it seemed like nothing more than a distant memory or better still. A distant lie. **** “Your highness,” two maids appeared in my room as they curtsied. The guards took my things to my room, and arriving there I had seen two maids. The maids bustled around me, eager to prepare me for whatever awaited beyond the confines of the room. Their voices were gentle, their hands swift as they moved about the spacious chamber. The room itself was queenly, with plush furnishings and ornate decorations adorning every surface. A large, four-poster bed sat at the center of the room, draped in rich fabrics and soft pillows. As the maids undressed me, I felt a bit nervous. They slipped a delicate lingerie set over my skin, followed by a silk robe that cascaded down to my ankles. Despite the luxurious garments, I felt exposed, as if every inch of my skin was on display for the world to see. As I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to gather my thoughts, one of the maids approached me with a small drink in hand. "Here, Your Majesty," she said softly, offering me the glass. "It's an herbal concoction. It will help with any pain you may be feeling after your night with his majesty." I frowned at the drink, I sniffed it, it was disgusting, the green color was also not pleasing. So I simply raised my hand, "This is not my first time," I replied curtly, pushing the glass away. The maid's expression faltered, and she exchanged a glance with her companion before hastily retreating from the room. Left alone once more, I couldn't help but sigh. I looked down at the rather expensive looking robe, I would rather be dressed in T-shirt and shorts or sleep naked but here I am dressed as if I was about to be sold to the highest bidder. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, and I tensed, was he coming to my room? Oh my God, how do I reject him? I mean he can sleep with his mistress, why would he even need me. Why did he even marry me or want a child with me? I was biting my fingers as I stood up staring at the door, “It's opened.” I simply said even though my heart had plummeted into my stomach. I was expecting to see Cassian on the other side, but to my surprise, it was another man, tall and handsome, with a striking resemblance to Cassian. "You aren't Cassian," I stated the obvious, my confusion evident. The man smirked, stepping closer. "Nope. I'm your brother-in-law. I came to see the bride," he said, his gaze raking over me appreciatively. "And wow, you are even more beautiful in person, you look like a little white dove. Fair skin with those doe eyes of yours." I frowned, feeling a flush of discomfort at his brazenness. "Isn't it rude to appear in your brother's wife's room unannounced and also complimenting her?" I retorted, stepping back instinctively. But the man only stepped closer, his smirk widening. "I didn't know the king had a brother," I added. He looked like a predator and I the prey. It was unsettling. Before he could respond, the door burst open, and Dorian entered the room, his expression furious. "Get away from her," he growled, moving to intercept the man. The man chuckled, raising his hands in surrender. "Calm down, soldier. I was just leaving," he lied casually, before turning to me with a wink. "I'll see you around, little dove." As he sauntered out of the room, I couldn't help but shiver at the intensity of his gaze. Turning to Dorian, I asked, "Do you know him?" My fingers clenched tightly around the silk robe. Dorian's expression darkened as he spoke. "Magnus Ashwood. He is the king's brother.” Dorian looked at me with concern, his eyes searching mine for any sign of distress. "Are you okay?" he asked softly. I nodded, feeling a knot of nervousness tighten in my stomach. "Just a bit shaken, that's all," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. He gave me a reassuring smile before explaining, "I'm supposed to be here. I arrived earlier and was told to guard the door." But before I could ask any further questions, his phone rang, interrupting our conversation. His eyes widened as he glanced at the screen, and without hesitation, he moved to turn on the TV. Confusion gnawed at me as I watched him, wondering what could have possibly caught his attention. But as the screen flickered to life, my confusion turned to horror. There, on the screen, was a picture of Lavina – my sister. "Lavina Stormborn, Princess of Ardontalia. First daughter of the Stormborn royal family, has been found dead," the news anchor announced
