Chapter Twelve
Sage
I sat there, watching River as he walked away. Just then, I saw the birthmark on the back of his arm. As I turned my head to look back at Callan, it’s like the entire world went into slow-motion mode all of a sudden.
His eyes were as wide as I’d ever seen them. And there was surprise in them too. But then the surprise morphed into fury. Pure, unadulterated fury. He got up and walked away from me, out of the backyard, and around to the front of the house. Then I heard his truck start.
My heart had stopped beating when I’d realized what was happening. And it finally began pumping the blood through my body once again. I jumped up to my feet and ran through the house. “Mom, I’m going out. River’s in bed. I think.”
“Where’re you going?”
“I’m not sure. I’ll be back.” Gr
