“I think we’re ready for another try,” Drinn said. She grabbed the hair on the top of my head and pulled it back, so I was looking straight up, and she peered into my eyes, pulling the eyelids down with her other hand. “You look about done.” She released my head and I let it flop down. Dominus was lying against the wall, his dark eyes unblinking, staring up at the ceiling. His face was a mass of red raw flesh around his eyes and down his cheeks where his mask had been. I couldn’t tell if he was breathing. Then, very slowly, he closed and opened one eye, winking at me.
