I blinked against the sunlight filtering through sheer curtains. The sheets were soft far too soft to be mine and the room smelled like cedarwood and clean linen. Damon.
Memories of the night before rushed back like a flood his lips, his hands, the way he made me feel like something precious in his dangerous world. I reached for the cool pillow beside me. Empty.
A folded note lay where his head had been.
“Didn’t want to wake you, princess. Get dressed driver’s waiting. We’ve got plans.”
Plans?
I slipped into the black satin robe draped over the chair and padded across the marble floor. A sleek black gift bag sat on the dresser with a note stuck to the side. “Wear this.”
Inside was a deep emerald dress, short and clingy, with thin straps and a slit that teased up one thigh. Beneath it, a box held black strappy heels and a velvet box containing an emerald pendant that matched my eyes perfectly.
Who was this man?
Forty minutes later, I sat in the back of a luxury black SUV cruising through the city. The driver was quiet, professional. I didn’t ask questions. I didn’t need to. Damon had a way of making the world bend around him and apparently, around me now too.
We stopped in front of Etoile, one of the most exclusive designer boutiques in the city. A woman stepped out the front door as if she’d been waiting.
“Miss Eva? Welcome. Mr. Moretti reserved the entire boutique for you.”
My jaw nearly dropped. “He… what?”
“This way,” she said smoothly.
Inside, racks of luxurious clothing glistened under crystal chandeliers. Champagne was waiting on a side table, along with chocolate-covered strawberries and delicate pastries. Another note sat by the glass:
“You’re mine now. And mine gets everything.”
Heat fluttered low in my stomach.
Two hours later, I stood surrounded by boxes. Designer shoes, sleek dresses, coats, sunglasses, lingerie I blushed just looking at. Damon had sent in his assistant to swipe everything I so much as glanced at.
“Mr. Moretti wants you to be ready for any occasion,” the assistant said with a knowing smirk. “He mentioned Milan. Paris. Dubai.”
“What he’s taking me to Paris?”
“He doesn’t just date women,” she said. “He claims them.”
I was still reeling when we arrived at the next stop: A private jeweler.
Here, Damon was waiting.
He sat on a leather sofa, one leg crossed over the other, dark slacks tailored to perfection, shirt sleeves rolled up, tattoos crawling up his arms like shadows in motion. When he saw me, he stood slowly, eyes roaming with heat and pride.
“You look like temptation.”
“You bought out a boutique for me,” I said. “Temptation’s your fault.”
He smirked, stepping closer. “Correction…I spoiled what already belonged to me.”
I opened my mouth to retort, but he lifted a small velvet box. “I saved this one for last.”
Inside was a bracelet, delicate but bold. Tiny diamonds formed the word “YOURS” in cursive, inlaid in white gold.
“For when I’m not there to remind you.”
I swallowed hard. “This is… a lot.”
“I know.” His voice lowered. “And I don’t care. You’ve been surviving too long. It’s time someone made you feel safe. Desired. Worshipped.”
I stared at him, my throat tightening.
“Why me, Damon?”
His hand brushed my cheek. “Because you don’t chase power. You carry pain in your eyes but still show up. You laugh like the world hasn’t broken you. And because when I touch you… you burn for me.”
We had lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the bay. He fed me bites from his plate. We drank wine. He told me about his sister, about how he swore to protect the people he loved ever since she was taken. I told him about growing up invisible in a house full of eyes that never saw me.
There was a moment of silence. Not awkward intimate.
“I’d kill for you, Eva,” he said suddenly.
I blinked. “That’s… a hell of a leap from shopping.”
“I mean it.”
His jaw was tense, his eyes locked on mine.
“If anyone hurts you, they won’t live long enough to regret it.”
Back at his penthouse, we lay on the plush rug in his living room, surrounded by opened boxes and packaging. The air was warm, lazy, intimate. He played with my hair as I lay with my head on his chest.
“Have you always had this much control?” I murmured.
“Only over things that matter.”
“Do I matter?”
He rolled over, pinning me beneath him. His eyes burned down into mine.
“Eva… you’re the only thing that does.”
His kiss stole the breath from my lungs. There was no rush this time just heat and reverence. His fingers trailed my skin like worship. The s*x wasn’t rough or unhinged it was something deeper. Messy. Tangled. Raw in a different way.
He made me feel cherished, like every gasp and moan was a secret he wanted to own.
Later, I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows wearing one of his shirts, watching the city lights blink like stars. Damon came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist.
“What are you thinking?” he asked.
“That this feels like a dream.”
He kissed the curve of my neck. “It’s real.”
“You barely know me.”
“I know enough,” he said. “And I trust what I feel.”
I turned to him, heart pounding. “What happens now?”
“We build. Together.”
He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “I’ll protect you. And I’ll teach you to protect yourself too.”
Just as the words settled into my bones, his phone buzzed on the table. He ignored it. It buzzed again.
He sighed and picked it up, frowning as he read the screen. His expression darkened.
“What is it?”
He glanced at me, hesitated. Then:
“They found someone I’ve been looking for. A man who betrayed me.” He slipped his phone into his pocket. “I need to handle it.”
I nodded. “Okay. Be safe.”
But before he left, he paused in the doorway, his face unreadable.
“If I’m not back by midnight… don’t wait up. Lock the doors.”
And then he was gone.
I stared after him, a chill running down my spine. The apartment suddenly felt too big. Too quiet.
I walked to the window, trying to shake the unease but then something caught my eye.
A black car.
Parked across the street.
Watching.
