Chapter 2: Married who?

1490 Words
Warmth brushed against my face, pulling me from the depths of sleep. I blinked slowly, wincing as sunlight pierced straight through my eyelids. I lifted a hand to shield myself, but even that small movement made pain ripple across my body. Every muscle throbbed. Every inch of me felt… used. Exhausted in a way that didn’t make sense. Why does my body hurt like I was dragged through hell? I searched my memory, but all I found were fragments. Jessica’s party. Laughter. Music. Hazel leaving me by the roadside. After that… nothing. A perfect blackout swallowing everything. A heavy sense of dread slid down my spine. I forced myself upright and froze as my eyes traced the room. This wasn’t my apartment. This wasn’t anywhere I’d ever been. The room was massive, four times bigger than my entire home, wrapped in maroon walls and classical designs that whispered wealth and danger. Antique furniture gleamed in the filtered sunlight. Everything felt expensive… untouchable. Everything felt like it belonged to someone powerful. What kingdom did I wake up in? My gaze dropped and the breath was punched from my lungs. I was naked. My hand slapped over my mouth to muffle a scream. Panic surged violently, clawing at my throat. Why am I naked?! What the hell happened to me?! Did someone undress me, touch me? No, no, no— My thoughts spiraled wildly. Drunk girl in a strange bed, in a room she didn’t recognize. The kind of scene you only see in horror stories disguised as romance. But I didn’t drink. I didn’t even stay long enough to get tipsy. So what- The door burst open. My heart stopped. I dragged the blanket over my skin like a shield, clutching it with trembling hands. I didn’t dare look up at first, only saw the shadow of large boots approaching, each step echoing through the suffocating silence. When I finally lifted my gaze, the world stood still as my eyes landed on a man. He was… devastating. Tall, lean, sculpted like he’d stepped out of a forbidden fantasy. His features were sharp, symmetrical, impossibly perfect that made my breath catch painfully in my chest. His eyes were light brown, warm but intense, like he could burn through me with a single glance. Foreign. Dangerous. The top buttons of his black shirt were undone, revealing a chest that looked carved by hands that understood sin far too well. My entire body flushed in shame and something darker and something traitorous. Then he smiled. Slow. Teasing. Like he knew exactly what I was thinking. “Interesting.” His voice, a deep, rich baritone, rolled through me like dark velvet. It awakened something I didn’t even want to name. He chuckled, showing teeth too white, too perfect. Too unreal. I stared at him because part of me still thought this was a dream. “Sweetheart, you’re not dreaming.” My heart seized. Wait—what? I didn’t say that out loud. “Definitely not. It’s useless.” Useless? What was useless? Then everything clicked, and horror jolted through me. “Did you just—" “Read your mind?” he finished. My stomach dropped. My soul dropped. Can you hear me? “Yes.” My mouth parted and a sharp breath escaped. “How—who are you? Where am I? And why am I—w-why am I naked?!” The questions tore out of me. I sounded hysterical, but how else was I supposed to sound? Was I drugged? He laughed softly, perfect white teeth flashed. Like he was amused by my terror. “You weren’t drugged.” He did it again, reading my thoughts like flipping pages in a book. “S-so who are you? A-are you some kind of psychic?” “Maybe.” Before I could blink, he was in front of me. Right in front of me. His speed was inhuman. His presence overwhelming. His scent wrapped around me, soap, mint, something dark and warm. “H-How did you do that?” I whispered, almost out of breath. Up close, everything about him sharpened. Even the air seemed to bend around him. His eyes—were they darker? They were brown earlier. Now they looked almost… black. He leaned closer, invading every inch of space I had left. “If I stay this close, sweetheart, I might go for another round.” His breath ghosted against my ear, sending shivers down my spine. Another round? My heart stopped. My blood froze. My skin heated. “ W-what do you mean?” His hand slid up my thigh. I forgot how to breathe. He glanced at my lips. My pulse exploded. “Like this.” His mouth crashed onto mine before I could think. Rough, hungry, soft, confusing, consuming. Electricity flooded my body. Heat curled through my stomach. My fingers gripped the back of his neck, dragging him closer without thinking. He smiled against my lips. A predator’s smile. Satisfied. Claiming. He lowered me onto the bed, deepening the kiss until the world blurred around the edges. Then his hand touched my back. Cold. Too cold. I gasped and pulled away. “Y-Your hand… it’s so cold.” His eyes darkened again, pitch black, soulless, dangerous. Before I could move, he pinned my arms above my head, his grip like iron. Then his lips brushed my neck. An involuntary tremble racked through me. “I’m sure I can have your blood now.” Time stopped. And then I felt something painful on my neck. Sharp. Cold. Merciless. They pierced my skin. Pain exploded through my body. I screamed. My hands clawed at his shoulders, trying to shove him off, but he didn’t move. He held me effortlessly, drinking like he owned my body… my life… my soul. “St-stop! Let me go!” He didn’t. He only moaned, pleasure spilling from his throat, vibrating against my skin. My strength drained. My arms fell. My vision blurred. And suddenly I hear a crash. A loud thud. The weight on top of me vanished. I collapsed onto the bed, trembling, barely conscious. Another voice entered the room. Smooth. Calm. “I don’t think barging into my room and throwing your king against the wall is wise, Alexander.” King? My attacker—my nightmare—stood up, brushing off dust as if he hadn’t just nearly drained me to death. “Forgive me. You were close to killing her, my king.” My heart stuttered violently. “ I already got what I wanted.” He licked my blood off his lips. My blood.Everything hasn't registered yet. I was in shock, my mind is a mess. “ I don’t need her anymore.” “I think you’re wrong, my king.” “I marked her, that’s all I needed.” Marked. My stomach dropped again. Their voices blurred as I clung to consciousness, trying not to slip into the darkness. “Her blood isn’t enough to complete you, even if you mark her. That’s what the Oracle said.” A long, frustrated groan escaped from the guy called King. His cold stare slid to me. Empty. Detached. Like I was a burden he couldn’t dispose of yet. “I’ll speak with her, Alexander. You take care of this mess.” He gestured to me. The mess he is talking about. He walked away, paused at the door. “Don't lay your fangs on her.” Then he was gone. Alexander turned to me. His gray eyes met mine, softer, almost apologetic. He approached slowly. I backed away instinctively, clutching the blanket like it could save me. He sat at the edge of the bed. “Forgive the king’s behavior. He… isn’t a very patient man.” I couldn’t speak. My throat burned. My vision swam. He handed me a glass of water. “Drink this. You’ll feel better.” My hands shook violently as I took it. “W-who are you? Why am I here? Are you going to kill me?” He stood, towering but less threatening somehow. “You don’t need to fear me, Hope.” “H-How do you know my name?” " You're not really a stranger to us." His voice stayed gentle, careful. " I don't even know you, people." They must have the wrong person. " We can't be wrong and I know it might be confusing for now but you'll understand." He can also read minds. " Who are you really?" “ We’re vampires.” he said it casually. “W-What?” “We’re vampires. We suck blood to live.” I let it sink in first for a few seconds. No. No. No. This had to be a joke. A prank. A nightmare. “ T-then where am I? What do you want from me?” His smirk was soft but edged with truth. “You’re here because you just married our king.”
