Chapter 11: Point of No Return

Chapter 11: Point of No Return Ellie crossed a dangerous line she could never uncross. Armed with the new information from Jazz and the disgruntled accountant, she anonymously sent a complete file to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) tip-off line, along with copies to two major newspapers. The documents detailed suspicious transactions, names of young women used to entertain clients, and Richard’s attempts to silence complaints. Within days, the story exploded. Financial news outlets ran headlines: “Hedge Fund Manager Richard Thornton Under Investigation Amid Serious Allegations” Richard’s world began crumbling. Investors pulled funding. His wife Victoria publicly distanced herself. Chloe Whitmore deleted most of her social media and went into hiding. But the victory tasted like ash. Sophie returned one evening, furious. “Do you realise what you’ve done? One of the girls mentioned in those files is now being harassed by journalists. She’s terrified. This isn’t justice, Ellie — this is chaos!” “I warned them,” Ellie replied coldly, though doubt was creeping in. “They should have thought about the consequences before they destroyed us.” Ava, however, was exhilarated. “We’re winning! Keep pushing.” The biggest blow came from home. Patricia called in tears. “I saw the news, Eleanor. They’re mentioning a young woman from the North connected to all this. Please tell me it’s not you.” Ellie couldn’t lie anymore. The silence on the line was deafening. “I didn’t raise you to become this,” Patricia said, her voice breaking. “Revenge has turned you into a stranger. Come home, or don’t come home at all.” Ellie hung up and screamed into her pillow. The revenge that was supposed to heal her was tearing apart the last remaining pieces of her life. That night, Professor Edward Lang showed up at her shared house, drunk and desperate. He banged on the door until Ava threatened to call the police. “You stupid girl!” he slurred. “You’ve ruined everything. I’ll make sure you never graduate.” Ellie stepped outside and faced him. “You used your position to prey on students. You deserve everything that’s coming.” For the first time, she saw real fear in a man who once held power over her. The consequences of Ellie’s actions hit like a storm. Richard Thornton’s lawyers sent her a formal cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action for defamation and harassment. The university placed her on immediate suspension pending a full investigation into her conduct. Her cleaning jobs fired her after receiving anonymous complaints. She was spiralling again. Marcus found her sitting on a bench near campus, looking completely defeated despite her “victories.” He sat beside her without being invited. “You got what you wanted,” he said quietly. “Richard is finished. Jazz is destroyed. Lang is under scrutiny. So why do you look more broken than ever?” Ellie laughed bitterly, tears in her eyes. “Because I’m just like them now. I used people. I lied. I hurt innocent girls just to get my revenge. I told myself it was justice, but it was never just about justice.” Marcus took her hand gently — the first real touch in months. “It’s not too late to stop. You can still come back from this.” For a moment, Ellie leaned into his warmth, feeling the girl she used to be surface. But then her phone buzzed with another threatening message — this time a photo of Ava leaving their shared house. “They’re coming after my family now,” she whispered. The fire returned. She pulled her hand away from Marcus. “I can’t stop,” she said, voice hardening again. “Not until they have nothing left.” Ava burst into the room later that evening with shocking news. “Richard wants to meet you. Alone. He says he has a proposal that could make all of this go away.” Ellie stared at the message on Ava’s phone. A final confrontation was coming. She stood up, looking at her reflection in the cracked mirror on the wall. The girl staring back was beautiful, intelligent… and almost unrecognisable. This was her déchéance — the complete fall. But she was no longer falling passively. She was dragging everyone down with her. Ellie stood in front of the mirror in her tiny Peckham room, adjusting the simple black coat she had bought from a charity shop. No more designer dresses. No more playing dress-up for powerful men. Tonight, she would meet Richard Thornton as an equal — or at least, that was what she told herself. Ava tried to stop her. “This feels like a trap. You shouldn’t go alone.” “I have to,” Ellie replied, her voice steady but her hands trembling slightly. “This ends tonight. One way or another.” Sophie had completely distanced herself after their last argument, leaving only Ava as her remaining ally. The isolation weighed heavily on Ellie, but she pushed forward. Richard had chosen a discreet, upscale restaurant in Mayfair — neutral ground. When Ellie arrived, he was already seated in a private corner. He looked different: tired, with dark circles under his eyes and a tightness in his jaw that betrayed his usual confidence. “You’ve caused quite a mess, Eleanor,” he said as she sat down, his tone surprisingly calm. “You caused it first,” she countered. “When you treated me like a toy you could buy and discard.” Richard leaned forward. “Let’s skip the dramatics. I’m prepared to make you a very generous offer. I’ll drop all legal threats. I’ll pay off your remaining university debts, ensure you graduate with honours, and give you a substantial settlement — enough for you and your mother to live comfortably. In return, you delete everything, retract the statements, and disappear from my life.” Ellie stared at him for a long moment. The offer was tempting. It would solve all her immediate problems. She could go home to her mother with dignity. She could rebuild. But something inside her had changed too much. “And what about all the other girls you used?” she asked quietly. “What about Sophie? What about the ones who came before me?” Richard smiled coldly. “This isn’t a charity. This is business. Take the deal, Eleanor. It’s the smartest choice you’ve had in months.” Ellie stood up slowly. “No. I’m not for sale anymore.” As she walked out of the restaurant, her heart raced. She had just turned down security and a future for the sake of revenge. The weight of that decision settled heavily on her shoulders.
