Josh was already drifting back toward consciousness when he felt Sparkle jerk beside him. His eyes sprang open in the dimness to find her pushing up into a sitting position. He immediately turned onto his side and propped himself up on one elbow. She’d thrown both legs over the side of the bed and her head was c****d slightly, her body eerily still.
“What is it?” he murmured, reaching out to stroke a hand down the length of her naked back. The muscles beneath her palm were rigid with tension. Then he heard it. Faint popping noises, from either down the hall or maybe the floor beneath them. Followed closely by what sounded like human screams.
