Lucy POV
The cold dock wind cuts through my thin dress. Ten bodyguards aimed their guns at us.
“Raymond, what…are you doing here?” William whispered, trying to get Raymond’s attention.
“Shut up!” Raymond yelled, pointing his gun directly at Will’s head.
My heartbeat raced fast. How did his own best friend betray him like that? Or did they plan this all along? My thoughts keep spinning over and over again. Yet I couldn't give myself a proper answer.
I gazed at the woman I called my mother. She was not like the woman I grew up with; she stood on the boat deck holding my father's hair as if he meant nothing to her, her own husband.
Will does not flinch. He squeezes my hand and then lets go of it. I tried to hold him back, but walked towards Nana, “Let him go.” He said calmly.
Nana smiled like she had already won.
“If you care much about this old dust, tell Lucy to drop the drive on the dock,” she says, her voice sweet but poisonous. “Then move forward, alone.”
My fingers closed tighter around the small black drive. It is the only thing keeping my dad alive.
“Don’t do it.” Will yelled without turning his head.
“Shut up, brother,” Raymond growled, pressing his gun hard on William. The word brother sounded like a gunshot in my heart. I wanted to hit him, maybe shoot him right in his head, but I remained frozen, my legs were not moving, and I was too weak to fight for him.
William turned his head towards me, and my life scattered. He has gone through a lot to keep me safe, and if losing my life would save him, I would. I take one step, the wood creaks under my shoes, and another step, my legs trembling. Blood dripping from my side.
“Lucy, no,” Will growls.
I keep walking until I stand five feet from the edge of the boat. Nana’s eyes shine bright with victory. “Throw it,” she orders.
I pull my arm back to throw, but Will moves faster than lightning. He grabs Raymond’s gun hand, twists, and the shot goes into the sky. At the same moment, he kicks the nearest man off the dock into the water.
Chaos explodes. Guns fire, bullets spark off metal. I drop flat on the wood, protecting myself from getting hit.
Will fight like a storm. He hits one man harder and takes his gun from him, he shoots another in his stomach, and another straight in his head. Blood spilled from their bodies as they fell like a cut tree.
Blood on the water, everywhere in the corner of the place.
Nana drags my dad toward the cabin door. She yelled at his men, “Kill them both!”
I crawl forward on my belly. My fingers find the drive again. I shove it into my bra, my heart pounding in my chest.
Will immediately shade me with his body, blood dripping down from his arm, “Run!” he yelled.
“No…” I screamed, shaking my head. “I can't leave my father here…”
William jerks me up with one and rushes towards the boat. Bullets fly past our heads, and William dodges them all. We jump onto the deck. Will shoots the rope that ties the boat to the dock. The engine roars and starts moving fast, away from the men.
As I turned to take a quick gaze at my Father, Nana was standing inside the glass cabin door, still holding Dad, her gun to his head now.
Will pushes me behind a big metal box.
“Stay down,” he whispers. “I’m coming back.”
The boat speeds fast in the water. Wind screams. My hair whips my face.
Will looks around the corner with his gun ready to attack. Nana opens the cabin door. She shoves my dad out, and he falls hard on the deck, his hands still tied.
“Lucy!” Dad called, his voice weak, and I started running towards him.
Raymond climbed over to the back of the boat. He grabbed Will from behind and put a knife to his throat.
“I’m sorry,” Raymond whispered, pain evoked in his voice. “They took my little sister hostage; I had no choice.”
Will does not fight. Blood trickles down his neck where the knife presses.
Nana walks closer, “Give me the drive, Lucy,” she aimed her gun at me.
“Or I'll shoot your daddy right now.”
My dad shakes his head fast. “Don’t give it to her!”
I look at Will. His eyes were calm as ice, and he gave the tiniest nod.
I pull the drive out slowly. Nana smiles, stretching her hand to get it, but her smile fades as I throw the drive high above her head, and it lands in the water.
“Lucy….” Nana barks like a caged dog, “Why do you want to die like your mother?” She raised her gun at me once more; this time, her eyes were burning with rage.
As she clicks on the trigger, my eyes blink twice, ready for my fate. Will hit Raymond hard, spins, and tackles Nana. The gun falls from her hand and slides across the deck.
I rushed to my father, with a shaking head, and I untied the ropes around his wrists.
Will and Nana fight behind me. She claws his face, but he pins her arms.
Dad hugs me tight. “My brave girl,” he whispers.
The boat keeps going fast. No one was in it; we were flying blind into the night.
Raymond picks up Nana’s gun and points it at Will’s back. “Stop!,” he yelled, his voice shaking. “It’s over.”
Will turns slowly, blood all over his clothes.
“I never wanted this, brother,” Raymond said in a shaking voice.
“Then put the gun down,” Will says, calm.
Raymond glanced shift towards me, he turned towards Nana, then my father, who was weak on the floor, before he put down his gun.
Nana laughs, cold and crazy. “You are all dead anyway. Cullen was watching everything.” She pointed at the camera close to us, “He has already sent men.”
My heart raced fast as I looked around and saw small red lights blinking on the walls.
Will grabs my hand. “We jump, now.”
Dad’s eyes go wide. “The water is freezing!”
Will pulls us to the edge. “It is better to be cold than dead.”
Raymond steps forward. “I’m coming too.”
Nana tries to stand. “You traitor….”
Will kicks her hard, and she falls back to the floor, her head hitting the metal floor. She does not move.
The boat races toward a big bridge, and lights flash ahead of us. Police boats? Or Cullen’s men? We had no idea who they were.
Will gaze at me. “On three.” He placed his hand gently on my lap.
I nod slightly, my heart pounding in my chest, but I swallow hard to keep myself steady.
“One.”
I hold Dad’s hand.
“Two.”Raymond stood beside us.
“Three!” Then we jumped into the water.
The cold water hits me like a truck. Everything goes back and freezes.
I kicked hard, my lungs burned as I couldn't see anything. Will's strong hand grabbed me from behind.
He pulls me up. My head breaks out on the surface of the water. I gasp for air.
My father was coughing next to me, coughing even Raymond. Police lights flash everywhere as boats speed toward our direction.
It will pull me closer in the dark. His lips find my ear. “I have you, doll. Always.”
But then I saw it, a black speedboat cutting through the water, straight at us.
. No lights. No siren.
And standing at the front, holding a gun, was Cullen. He is still alive, and he is smiling, ready to strike.
