Morning inside the Cole mansion never felt peaceful.
Everything about the house carried tension. Even silence felt sharp there, like the walls themselves were listening.
Zara woke slowly to the faint sound of movement somewhere inside the room. For a few seconds, she remained still, staring blankly at the ceiling while exhaustion sat heavily in her body.
Then memory returned.
Last night.
The arguments.
The tension.
The line they crossed.
Her stomach tightened immediately.
She sat up too quickly and instantly regretted it when she noticed Adrian standing near the window already dressed for work. The early morning light poured across him, outlining the sharpness of his features and the cold composure he had somehow already regained.
That irritated her instantly.
How was he acting normal already?
Adrian glanced toward her briefly before returning his attention to the watch on his wrist.
“You’re awake.”
The calmness in his voice almost offended her.
Zara frowned immediately. “Obviously.”
Silence followed.
Awkward silence.
The kind that only made everything feel worse.
Zara looked away first, pulling the blanket tighter around herself while her thoughts spiraled uncontrollably. She hated this feeling. Hated the strange heaviness sitting inside her chest.
Nothing about last night was supposed to affect her emotionally.
Nothing.
It was part of the arrangement.
Necessary.
Simple.
So why did everything suddenly feel complicated?
Adrian picked up his suit jacket calmly. “You should eat something before my mother starts another war downstairs.”
That dragged Zara out of her thoughts immediately.
She looked toward him sharply. “You say that like it’s a normal thing.”
“It is a normal thing.”
“You people need therapy.”
That almost made him smile again.
Almost.
But it disappeared too quickly for her to be sure she actually saw it.
Then Adrian spoke again, quieter this time.
“You regret it.”
The statement caught her off guard.
Zara’s eyes narrowed instantly. “You really enjoy assuming things.”
“You’ve barely looked at me since you woke up.”
“That’s because your face is irritating.”
Adrian sighed softly. “Zara.”
“No, seriously,” she muttered while climbing out of bed. “How are you this calm right now?”
“What exactly do you want me to do?”
“I don’t know. Maybe act slightly uncomfortable?”
“I am uncomfortable.”
“You hide it well.”
“That’s generally how control works.”
Zara rolled her eyes immediately. “There you go again with your obsession with control.”
Adrian watched her quietly for a moment before speaking again.
“You’re angry.”
“I’m confused.”
The honesty slipped out before she could stop it.
That changed something in his expression instantly.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Zara looked away quickly before he could read too much from her face.
Because the truth was she did not know what to do with any of this anymore.
Last night had changed something between them whether she liked it or not.
The tension felt different now.
Closer.
More dangerous.
And she hated the fact that Adrian seemed affected too, even if he was pretending otherwise.
A knock interrupted the room suddenly.
Neither of them moved immediately.
Then another knock came.
“Mr. Cole,” a maid’s voice called carefully from outside. “Madam requested breakfast downstairs.”
Of course she did.
Zara immediately groaned. “I cannot survive your mother this early in the morning.”
“You’ll survive.”
“That’s easy for you to say. She actually loves you.”
Adrian gave her a look. “You have clearly never met my mother properly.”
That made Zara laugh despite herself.
A real laugh this time.
Small, but real.
Adrian stared at her for a second longer than necessary after that.
Then looked away first.
“We should go downstairs.”
Zara immediately frowned. “Together?”
“We’re supposed to be engaged.”
“We are engaged.”
“Exactly.”
Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten slightly again.
God.
This man was exhausting.
Breakfast was worse than expected.
Eleanor Cole sat at the head of the table dressed elegantly in cream silk while Richard Cole read through financial reports beside her. Vanessa was there too.
Of course she was.
Zara stopped walking the moment she saw her.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Adrian leaned slightly closer to her as they walked into the dining room. “Ignore her.”
“That’s difficult when she keeps appearing inside your house like a ghost.”
A faint trace of amusement flickered across his face before disappearing.
Vanessa looked up first and smiled immediately. “Good morning.”
Zara returned the smile politely even though internally she wanted to disappear.
Eleanor’s gaze swept over both of them slowly.
Too slowly.
And suddenly Zara became painfully aware of how close she was standing to Adrian.
Very aware.
The older woman’s eyes sharpened slightly before she smiled.
“Well,” she said smoothly, “you both look rested.”
Zara nearly choked.
Adrian looked completely unaffected.
Which made her want to throw something at him.
Richard folded his newspaper slowly before looking toward Adrian. “You’re late.”
“I have a company to run,” Adrian replied calmly. “Unlike everyone else here.”
Vanessa laughed softly into her coffee while Eleanor frowned slightly.
“You’ve become rude lately,” Eleanor said.
“You’ve become repetitive lately.”
The tension at the table thickened immediately.
Zara sat down quietly before another war could begin, but unfortunately peace never lasted long inside this family.
Vanessa looked toward Zara again with that same perfect smile.
“How are you adjusting to the mansion?”
Zara reached for her coffee slowly. “I’m surviving.”
“That sounds concerning.”
“It should.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
Eleanor however did not.
“You’ll need to adapt quickly,” she said calmly. “The Cole family receives attention constantly.”
Zara looked up carefully. “I’ve noticed.”
“People are already talking.”
Adrian’s expression darkened immediately. “Mother.”
“What?” Eleanor asked innocently. “I’m simply being honest.”
Zara kept her face neutral even though irritation burned beneath her skin.
“What exactly are they saying?”
Eleanor smiled faintly before sipping her tea. “That Adrian surprised everyone.”
The insult sat clearly beneath the sentence.
Vanessa quickly stepped in before the atmosphere became worse.
“To be fair,” she said lightly, “nobody expected Adrian to settle down at all.”
“That’s because he’s emotionally allergic to people,” Zara muttered before she could stop herself.
The table went silent for half a second.
Then Vanessa burst out laughing.
Even Richard looked amused.
Adrian slowly turned toward Zara with narrowed eyes. “Emotionally allergic?”
“You heard me.”
“That explains why you keep arguing with me,” Vanessa said with amusement still in her voice. “You’re the first person I’ve seen challenge him this much.”
“That’s because everyone else is scared of him.”
“And you’re not?”
Zara glanced briefly toward Adrian before answering.
“I should be.”
That made the room quieter again.
Because for one strange second, the sentence felt heavier than intended.
Adrian noticed too.
His eyes stayed on her for a moment too long before Eleanor interrupted sharply.
“Fear is not the issue,” she said coldly. “Respect is.”
Zara looked toward her calmly. “Respect should go both ways.”
Richard nearly laughed into his coffee.
Eleanor however looked deeply unimpressed.
“You speak very freely for someone in your position.”
There it was again.
That reminder.
That invisible line Eleanor constantly drew between them.
Zara’s fingers tightened slightly around her cup.
And before she could stop herself, she replied quietly, “And you remind me of my position every chance you get.”
The atmosphere shifted instantly.
Adrian slowly leaned back in his chair now, watching both women carefully.
Dangerously carefully.
Eleanor set her teacup down with controlled precision. “You misunderstand me.”
“No,” Zara replied softly. “I understand perfectly.”
Silence spread across the table.
Vanessa suddenly looked very interested in her coffee.
Richard looked entertained.
And Adrian looked tense.
Very tense.
Eleanor’s voice became colder now. “You are entering a world much bigger than yourself, Zara. My concern is whether you can survive it.”
Zara stared back steadily. “Maybe your concern should be why your son chose me in the first place.”
That landed harder than expected.
Especially on Adrian.
His eyes flickered toward her immediately.
Because honestly?
He had been asking himself the same question lately.
The drive to the company later that morning felt strange.
Too quiet again.
Zara sat beside Adrian staring out the window while her thoughts spiraled endlessly.
Breakfast had exhausted her emotionally.
Eleanor Cole somehow always managed to make her feel small and furious at the same time.
“You shouldn’t fight with her directly,” Adrian said suddenly.
Zara looked toward him immediately. “Interesting. I thought you enjoyed when I argued.”
“I enjoy when you argue with me.”
“That sounds toxic.”
“It probably is.”
That made her blink slightly.
Then laugh despite herself.
Adrian glanced toward her briefly before focusing back on the road.
The silence afterward felt lighter somehow.
Until Zara finally asked quietly, “Why did you choose me?”
That question changed the atmosphere immediately.
Adrian’s grip tightened slightly against the steering wheel.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
He stayed quiet.
Too quiet.
And Zara noticed immediately.
“That’s what I thought,” she muttered.
“It wasn’t planned.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Adrian exhaled slowly. “You were convenient.”
The words irritated her instantly.
“Wow. How romantic.”
“You asked.”
“And you answered like a psychopath.”
A faint trace of amusement appeared briefly on his face again.
Then disappeared.
But Zara noticed something else too.
He was lying.
Not completely.
But partially.
There was something he was not saying.
Something deeper.
And somehow that unsettled her.
Before she could ask anything else, Adrian’s phone rang through the car speakers.
He answered immediately.
“Yes.”
Silence followed for a few seconds.
Then his expression changed.
Sharp.
Dangerous.
“When?”
More silence.
Then suddenly Adrian cursed under his breath.
Zara straightened immediately. “What happened?”
He ended the call without answering.
“Adrian.”
His jaw tightened visibly.
“There’s a problem at the company.”
“What kind of problem?”
Adrian looked furious now.
“The board found out about us.”
And suddenly Zara understood exactly why his family cared so much about appearances.
Because this marriage was no longer just personal.
It was becoming corporate war too.
