The Wrong Place The Wrong Time

Zara Williams had mastered the art of being invisible. In a building like Cole Industries, that was survival. No one noticed cleaners unless something was wrong. And Zara made sure nothing ever was. She moved quietly, efficiently—head down, thoughts to herself. Because thinking too much only led her back to the same place. The hospital. The bills. Her mother. “Zara!” She turned quickly. “Yes, ma’am?” Her supervisor handed her a cloth. “Executive floor. Now. There was a spill.” Zara frowned slightly. “Executive floor?” “Yes. And be quick about it.” Zara nodded and grabbed her supplies. Her heart beat a little faster as she stepped into the elevator. She rarely went up there. Too many eyes. Too much judgment. The doors opened with a soft ding. Silence greeted her. Clean, polished silence. She walked carefully down the hallway, scanning for the spill. Then she saw it. Coffee. Dark liquid staining the white marble floor just outside a large office. Zara sighed softly. “Of course.” She set down her bucket and knelt to clean it. Focused. Precise. Until— The door behind her opened suddenly. Zara startled, losing her balance slightly as she turned. And that was when it happened. She slipped. The wet floor didn’t help. Her hand reached out instinctively— Grabbing onto the nearest thing to steady herself. Unfortunately… That “thing” was Adrian Cole. For a split second, everything froze. Zara’s hand gripped his shirt. His coffee—what was left of it—spilled down the front of his suit. And both of them just stared at each other. Zara’s eyes widened in horror. “Oh my God—” She stepped back immediately. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to— I was cleaning and I slipped and—” She stopped. Because Adrian wasn’t speaking. He was just looking at her. Not angry. Not shouting. Just… looking. Which somehow made it worse. “I’ll fix it,” she rushed out. “I’ll clean it, I promise—” “Stop.” His voice was calm. Too calm. Zara froze. Her heart pounded loudly in her chest. “I… I didn’t see you come out,” she said softly. Adrian glanced down at his now-ruined shirt. Then back at her. “You made a mess,” he said. Zara swallowed. “Yes, sir.” A pause. Then— “Come inside.” She blinked. “Sir?” “My office,” he clarified. “Now.” Zara hesitated. This didn’t feel like a good idea. But refusing the CEO? Even worse. She picked up her supplies and followed him inside. His office was exactly what she expected. Large. Minimal. Expensive. She stood near the door, unsure what to do. “I’ll clean it,” she said quickly. Adrian removed his jacket, placing it aside. “Do that.” Zara moved forward, kneeling slightly as she began dabbing at the stain. Her hands trembled just a little. “This is bad,” she muttered under her breath. “What is?” She froze. “Nothing.” “Say it.” She hesitated. Then sighed softly. “I said… this is bad. That suit looks expensive.” “It is.” Zara winced. “Of course it is.” Silence fell again. But this time… it was different. Less tense. More… aware. Adrian watched her as she worked. Careful. Focused. She didn’t look like someone trying to impress him. She looked like someone trying not to get fired. “What’s your name?” he asked suddenly. Zara paused. “Zara,” she said. “Zara Williams.” He nodded slightly. Then— “You’re new.” She frowned. “I’ve been here for almost a year.” “Then you’re invisible.” The words hit harder than expected. Zara gave a small, dry smile. “That’s kind of the job.” Adrian didn’t respond immediately. Something about her answer lingered. “You’re not good at it,” he said finally. She blinked. “What?” “Being invisible.” Zara straightened slightly, confused. “Sir, I just spilled coffee on you. I think I’m doing a great job at being noticed—for the wrong reasons.” For a brief moment— The corner of his lips almost lifted. Almost. Adrian turned away. “Finish up.” Zara nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.” But as she continued cleaning— Neither of them noticed the shift that had just happened. Something small. Something insignificant. Or at least… That’s what it seemed. Because neither of them knew— That this accidental meeting… Would soon become the most deliberate decision of their lives.
