Gonzo was stone-cold sober. After Hunter had left for New Jerusalem, the mechanic found he had little taste for beer or anything else. He dumped a bucket on Daley and Crow, who were not too happy at being roused abruptly from their sleep to find their women gone after Gonzo had sent them home. He wanted them completely sober for the rest of the night. Hunter had left believing there was some unforeseen threat looming over them and Gonzo trusted Hunter's instinct more than he trusted anything else in life.
