XXIII Nurse SallyAt the time, going underground seemed like a good idea. Lake believed that instead of remaining above ground where she could be seen by anyone, climbing into the darkness of the sewers would get her off the streets after her escape with twenty other women. After she had descended into the storm water drain and entered the maze of tunnels that ran beneath the city, she had stopped at a relatively dry juncture a good twenty minutes from where she had entered the drain and sank to the ground to catch her breath.
