"Veronica—" Edward's voice darkened, booming louder than before.
She flinched, and stumbled back as Edward pulled his arm out of her grip. He had been listening to her with mounting anger. He couldn't even understand what he had seen in her in the first place. He could hardly tolerate her as it was.
Then, quietly, but with an authority that silenced the room, he spoke to Veronica, but loud enough for everyone in the room to hear him.
"She's here for work. She's done nothing wrong. If you're going to embarrass someone, Veronica—look in the mirror. Because this?" He sized her up with a movement of his hand. "This is embarrassing."
A collective gasp rippled through the room. It came as a shock that he was taking another woman's side over his girlfriend.
