Sam discovered that Wassim’s eyes had become smaller with old age. Wassim used to blame his spectacles for this, Sam recalled. By contrast, the eyes of the younger man sitting before Sam at a heavy wooden dining room table with gold-plated embellishments were remarkably larger. As a teenager, Wassim had the eyes of Ancient Egyptian frescoes — eyes the shape of enormous almonds, with a straight horizontal line of black running out toward the ears, like stems. Some Americans dressing as Ancient Egyptians for Halloween costume parties draw this line with eyeliner, to look as Wassim and his family had as a birthright. The young Wassim’s eyes were fixed on his grandson.
