7. The Warning

504 Words
Julian felt a kind of happiness he hadn’t felt in years. The coffee date with Clara had been simple and perfect. He had been able to talk to her as himself, not as the famous fighter. But that feeling of peace didn’t last long. He was called to a meeting at the pack's main office. It wasn’t a casual call. It was a command. He knew what was coming. When he walked into the room, his uncle, Alistair, was sitting at the head of a long table. Alistair was an older werewolf, a man who believed in old traditions and strict rules. The air in the room was heavy and cold. "Julian," Alistair said, his voice flat. "We need to talk about the woman." Julian’s heart dropped. "What woman?" he said, trying to act dumb. "Don't play games with me," Alistair snapped. "The human. The dancer. We have eyes and ears everywhere. You have been seen with her. You know the rules." Julian felt the wolf inside him begin to growl, a low, angry hum. "She's just a friend," he said, the lie tasting sour in his mouth. "A friend you met in secret? A friend you are putting in danger?" Alistair leaned forward, his eyes hard. "Humans are weak. They are not like us. They cannot handle our world. A human mate is a risk to us all. They can be used as a weapon against the pack. You are the champion. The leader. You cannot show this weakness." Julian’s anger flared. "Loving someone is not a weakness," he said, his voice low and firm. Alistair stood up, his power filling the room. "It is when that person is not one of us. You will end this. Now. Before it causes a problem. For you. For her. And for the pack." Julian left the meeting, his hands clenched into fists. He felt trapped, his heart torn between his love for Clara and his duty to his family. He drove to see his brother, Liam, who ran the pack's gym. Liam was younger than Julian, but he was wise. "He's right, you know," Liam said, after Julian told him everything. "Alistair is cold, but he’s not wrong about the danger." "I know the danger," Julian said, his voice filled with pain. "But I can't just throw her away. She's the first real thing I've felt in years. I'm not going to let them force me into being lonely again." Liam put a hand on his shoulder. "Then you have to be ready to fight. Not just in the ring. You have to be ready to fight everyone. And you have to be ready to protect her." Julian looked out the window. The city lights seemed to mock his loneliness. But in his mind, he saw Clara's face. Her smile. Her passion. And in that moment, his fear for her turned into a fierce, powerful promise. He wouldn't leave her. He would fight for her. He would protect her, no matter what it cost him.
