Chapter Sixteen She came off the freeway, taking the exit that would lead her into the car parking at Crown Casino’s front entrance. She drove on automatic. The same as she was inside. Her heart was frozen. Numb. She hadn’t seen David again after he’d left her standing alone in the middle of her office. Had tried not to look for him as she drove off, but she’d scanned the work-space for him. Relief and grief had mixed when she just saw an empty garden. She’d almost given in to the voice that screamed inside her and stopped the car to find him. Instead she gripped the steering wheel and made herself drive past, smothering her emotions until nothing leaked out. Until she was numb. She made herself feel this way on purpose. Survival mode.
