Evelyn's POV
The silence around the dining table was broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock.
Richard.
Of course he would come.
He had never accepted the word no.
Anthony rose from his chair with the same calm expression he wore in board meetings.
"How many people did he bring?"
The servant answered, "Just his driver, sir. Mr. Clarke is alone."
"That," Anthony said quietly, "doesn't make him less of a problem."
Vincent Grayson folded his napkin and stood.
"I'll have security escort him off the property."
"No," I said.
Every pair of eyes turned toward me.
"If we hide behind the gates, he'll only claim I'm afraid of him."
Anthony studied my face.
"Are you sure?"
"I've spent three years letting Richard control every conversation. That ends today."
After a long moment, Anthony nodded.
"Then you won't face him alone."
The Grayson estate's front gates opened just enough for us to step outside.
Richard stood beside a black luxury sedan.
His suit was immaculate, but the dark circles beneath his eyes told another story.
For a second, he simply stared at me.
"You look different," he said.
"I am different."
His gaze shifted to Anthony.
"So this is real."
Anthony slipped one hand casually into his pocket.
"It is."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"You've known each other for what? Three days?"
"Long enough."
Richard ignored him and looked back at me.
"Evelyn... please."
It was the first time he'd ever said please to me.
"You can't honestly be doing this."
"I am."
"You don't love him."
"No."
His expression brightened for a heartbeat.
"I don't love you anymore either."
The hope vanished from his face.
"I made mistakes."
"You built a relationship on lies."
"I was trying to protect everyone."
"Telling me your daughter was your niece wasn't protection."
His jaw tightened.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
He didn't answer.
"After the wedding?" I continued. "After another year? Five years?"
"I don't know."
"Exactly."
He ran a frustrated hand through his hair.
"Tonia means nothing to me."
I almost laughed.
"She meant enough to have your child."
His face hardened.
"I came here to fix this."
"No."
"You haven't even listened."
"I listened for three years."
Anthony finally spoke.
"Mr. Clarke, I believe you've said everything that needs saying."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"This doesn't concern you."
Anthony stepped slightly closer to me.
"It concerns my fiancée."
The word hung in the air.
Fiancée.
Richard looked as though someone had struck him.
"You're really going through with this."
"Yes."
His gaze returned to me.
"Was any of it real?"
I answered honestly.
"Everything I felt was real."
"And now?"
"Now I've learned that love without honesty isn't love at all."
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Finally, Richard reached into his jacket pocket.
"I brought something."
He held out a small velvet box.
"The engagement ring."
I stared at it.
The ring I'd once dreamed he would use.
The ring he had apparently bought while planning a future built on deception.
"I don't want it."
"It belongs to you."
"No."
I looked directly into his eyes.
"It belongs to the woman you lied to."
"I'm not her anymore."
Richard's shoulders sagged.
For the first time since I'd known him...
He looked defeated.
"I've lost you."
"Yes."
"And there's nothing I can do?"
"No."
A long silence followed.
Finally, he closed the box.
"I'm sorry, Evelyn."
The words sounded sincere.
But they had arrived far too late.
Without another word, Richard turned, climbed into his car, and drove away.
I watched until the vehicle disappeared beyond the trees.
Only then did I realize I was shaking.
Anthony removed his suit jacket and draped it gently over my shoulders.
"You handled that well."
"I don't feel like I did."
"You closed a door that needed closing."
I released a slow breath.
For the first time in years...
Richard Clarke was no longer the center of my life.
Ahead of me lay a wedding, a company to lead, and a legacy worth protecting.
Behind me...
Only memories that no longer had the power to define who I would become.
