The circle breaks

1028 Words
The Wardens moved like a tide, closing the circle around her, silver-tipped staffs glinting under the moonlight. Every step they took echoed against the marble, a sound that made Aríelle’s skin crawl. She clenched her fists, the bindings digging into her wrists, but she refused to bend. “You will kneel,” Selene’s voice rang across the chamber, calm but sharp as a blade. Aríelle’s jaw tightened. “I will not.” The first staff came down. She tried to dodge, but the silver crackled against the stone, close enough to singe her skin. The Wardens pressed forward, relentless. Then movement tore through the circle—a shadow, swift and impossibly silent. He stepped into the center, eyes scanning, hands ready. The Wardens froze, and the air snapped taut with tension. He didn’t hesitate. The first Warden lunged. He grabbed her wrist, twisting sharply. Her staff disintegrated in his grip, silver dust scattering across the floor. Another swung at him. He sidestepped, catching her arm mid-swing, and the attack faltered. Aríelle blinked, chest hammering. The bindings vanished. Freedom rushed in like a tidal wave. She fell to the floor, hands braced against the marble, and the runes beneath her feet flared gold. “Stay close,” he said, eyes locking onto hers. “I can’t hold them all for long.” She moved instinctively, heart hammering. The Wardens charged again. Aríelle raised her hands, instinct answering instinct. The runes pulsed, a golden barrier erupting outward. Staffs shattered before touching her, Wardens slammed backward as though invisible walls had struck them. Gasps filled the gallery. The citizens of Lúnareth stumbled back, whispering of gods and monsters. Selene’s lips parted, but no words came. “You wield forbidden power,” Selene said finally, voice trembling. “The moon does not grant this to the unchosen.” “I am not unchosen,” Aríelle said. Her voice rang across the chamber, iron in its tone. The golden light beneath her feet spread, tracing lines up her legs, across her arms. She lifted her hands, letting the energy flow outward. The Wardens froze, trapped in the cage of her magic. He stepped closer, shielding her as another Warden lunged. She moved as one with him—fluid, instinctive. Their combined force shattered the last of the approaching Wardens’ magic. Marble cracked. Silver markings flickered and dimmed. The High Priestess’s eyes widened in disbelief. Aríelle’s breath caught. “All this… for me?” His jaw tightened. “I never let them touch you. I won’t.” Another surge of power snapped through her, sharper now, more deliberate. Her fingers tingled, golden runes climbing her arms like living script. She took a step forward. The Wardens nearest her stumbled back, unable to resist. The moon above flickered, a pale crescent reacting to their power. Aríelle realized then: it could not touch her—not because of what she was, but because of him. Their bond had shifted the rules of everything. He turned to her, voice low, eyes silver-bright. “Do you understand?” “Yes,” she whispered. “I understand.” He let his hand brush against hers. The warmth of it made the power under her skin roar, surging outward like a river finally breaking its dam. Together, they moved forward, unstoppable. Wardens fell back, some unconscious, others disarmed entirely. The gallery watched in stunned silence as the so-called unchosen girl and the boy in silver eyes became the epicenter of raw, undeniable power. Selene’s hands shook as she raised her staff. “This… is impossible.” “Nothing about you or me is possible,” he said, gaze fixed on the High Priestess. “You erased me. You thought you could contain what you could not understand. And now you see the cost.” Aríelle felt the surge inside her respond to him, answering the defiance in his words. The golden runes blazed higher, wrapping around them, illuminating the chamber with heatless fire. She raised her voice. “We are not afraid. And we are not yours to command.” The Court reeled. Citizens whispered, the air thick with awe and terror. The Wardens looked around, powerless. Selene’s face was pale, every feature taut with disbelief. He stepped fully beside her, anchoring her against the onslaught of authority and expectation. “I kept you alive. I kept you hidden. I never let the moon take you because I never wanted to leave you unprotected.” Her pulse raced. “You mean… all this time…?” He didn’t need to answer. His actions spoke louder than words. Every Warden who moved, every attack they attempted, fell apart under the combined force of his presence and her awakening power. Aríelle lifted both hands. The golden light surged like liquid sunlight, cascading outward, pushing back everyone who had dared to surround her. The runes spun faster, faster, faster, until the marble itself seemed alive, quivering under the intensity. The High Priestess screamed, lifting her staff for a final, desperate strike. But Aríelle’s hand shot out, and the energy between them collided with Selene’s spell. The chamber shook violently. Pillars quivered. Silver dust rained from the ceiling. The moon trembled above, uncertain. Aríelle realized it could not claim her now. She could feel the ancient power radiating inside her, aligned with him, aligned with something the Court could never understand. He turned to her, voice soft but urgent. “We must leave. Now.” She nodded, adrenaline coursing through every vein. Their hands found each other fully, fingers interlacing. The golden runes flared one last time, blasting outward, illuminating the entire Court. Citizens fell back, Wardens staggered, and Selene sank to her knees, realizing control had been lost. The moon hung high, pale and distant, powerless against them. They stepped out of the circle together. The Court stared, wide-eyed, and the word spread like wildfire: they were not to be trifled with. And in that instant, Aríelle understood fully what he had protected her from, why the moon had ignored her, and why standing with him meant everything had changed forever. The world was no longer theirs to obey. It was theirs to challenge.
