Waking up the next day feeling extremely weak, she could barely sit up. while trying to get up, a voice stops her. “I think it best you remain like that, your temperature was high all through last night,” Howard said sleepy. “You were here all night?” She asked looking surprised. “Sorry, I couldn't help but check.” He said standing up with his hands deeper in his pocket. “Well, it's your house after all you can do whatever you want, but learn to respect one's privacy,” Laurel said as she unconsciously dragged the duvet to cover herself more. “Oh!” Howard sighed when he realized why she had been earlier surprised. “I’m Sorry, your baby's things are over there, I will go get you breakfast.” He apologized and left to get her some breakfast. Standing up with the last strength in her, she staggers into the bathroom and rests on the sink. She looked through the mirror and saw Alora. “Laurel, you look sick and tired,” Akita said worry evident in her face and voice. “I haven't felt this way for decades, I am extremely weak,” Laurel said her voice barely above a whisper. “Papa said it was because of the child,” Alora said in guilt. “Is the child draining my strength?” Laurel asked confused. “Something like that, but please take good care of yourself.” “Okay, what name should I give her?” Laurel said taking in a sharp breath. “It's left to you, I will agree with whatever you choose,” Alora said smiling softly. “Emma.” Laurel said after she thought for a while. “what do you think of that?” She asked looking up at the mirror. “Good, I will leave now,” Alora said and her image disappeared. “Wait…” “Who are you talking with?” Howard asked walking in. “Someone teach in how to knock,” Laurel mumbled in frustration. “Me?” She asked looking around. “How can you walk in on a lady in the bathroom, get out?” She said angrily dismissing the question he asked earlier. “Look I was just...” He tried to explain. “I said get out.” She said staring at him weakly. “I’m sorry.” He said sighing. “I brought breakfast for you.” He concluded as he turned to leave. “Thank you,” She said and locked the door behind him. After bathing and changing her dress, she did the same for the baby and fed her with the feed Howard bought. Laurel went to the visitors' room to search for Howard and there she met Ted. “Hey, handsome where is your dad?” She asked bending a little to his height. “He went out,” Ted answered looking at her. “Oh, how old are you?” “I’m seven.” “My guess is right then, I’m Laurel.” She said smiling as she introduced herself. “I’m Ted, I hope you will be a good mom to me.” He said smiling up at her. “A good mom?” She asked a bit confused. “I don't have a mom, that's why.” He said sadly. “Come on don't be sad, I promise to take good care of you, at least to repay your father for his favour.” She said as she cupped his cheeks. “Thanks.” He said still smiling. “I want to go out and find something to do, pls take care of yourself and Emma.” “Is that her name?” He asked. “Yes, she is asleep for now. I should be back before she wakes up.” She said as she left. In the Fays world “Summon Laurel now,” Elroy commanded as he walked into his throne room. “But why now, she's in a crowded place, she can't hear and it is not polite for a lady to faint like that,” Alora complained as she looked at her father. “Just do it there are things I need to speak to her about.” He said indifferent to her complaint. “But papa…” “Don't question me, Alora summon her now.” He commanded sternly. “Okay…” Alora said looking defeated. Laurel, who was walking in the centre of the market, suddenly felt dizzy. “What is wrong with me? I can't faint here.” She thought as she tried to ignore the feeling. “Are you alright?” A passerby asked. “I’m not, I need help.” She said as her eyes dim and crashed into the floor. “Papa? Seriously?” Laurel said angrily when she found herself in Fay’s words. “I seriously do not like the way you called me,” Laurel complained looking at her father. Not showing an interest in what she is saying. “You need to protect her, every single cut from her might bring more problems to mortals, her blood must not be seen by any creature, especially immortals that live as mortals, she must not break any rule of the Fay, take this necklace it must not leave her side,” Elroy said immediately passing the necklace to her. “Well, Papa don't you think it's early she's barely a month old,” Laurel said looking frustrated. “Are you listening to me, Laurel?” Elroy asked. “Of course, I am, but she's in the mortal world and I need to train her like a mortal. And about blood, I don't think it's possible.” “Make sure it is.” He said looking straight at her and giving no room for rejection. “Breaking a rule brings punishment but failing one's obligations…., you know what it comes with.” He said, his voice dripping with threat. “Are you threatening me?” Laurel asked looking at him in surprise. “I see no reason why I will, Alora went unpunished… but if you do, I don't know if the council will let you go Freely.” He said still maintaining his authority. “I understand Papa I promise not to disappoint you.” She finally said. “Make sure you obey all laws, I love you,” Elroy said as he held her head to touch his. “Come on Papa I will be very alright, love you too, I will leave now.” She said as she smiled at them. Waking up and seeing herself in the room she slept in last night, she stood up and went to the living room. “Sorry, I stressed you.” She said looking at Howard's back view. “You should have stayed indoors at least, I had to carry in front of all those eyes and now they won't hesitate to think something is going on.” He complained as he ran “I’m sorry.” She apologized. “I promise it won't repeat itself.” “You promise too much just stop it.” He said sighing. The next day, Laurel sat in the living room with the baby in her hands, a woman entered and greeted her. “How can I help you?” She asked after she greeted her. “Do you think it's best to keep your marriage hidden?” “Excuse me, but I’m not married,” Laurel said. “How then are you with a child?” “Oh!” She said dismissively. “I’m not Mr Howard's wife.” “And if this is about what happened yesterday I’m sorry but he only helped me, please don't take it wrongly.” She explained. “I see,” She said eyeing her suspiciously. “I will take my leave now.” She finally said as she stood up. “And if you can help me get a job I will be grateful,” Laurel said making her halt her steps. “Okay, I will inform you when I get one.” “Thanks, in advance,” Laurel said as she left. Later in the evening. “Something funny happened today, a woman came asking if we are married,” Laurel said to Howard as he settled down in the evening. “And you said what?” He asked looking at her. “No, of course, it's just a misunderstanding. What do you want for dinner? Bills on me.” She said smiling up at him.
