Clara's POV
I arrived at the Council building at eight forty-five the next morning, Nathan walking beside me with a thick briefcase. I wore a sharp black suit, my hair pinned back, looking every bit the CEO of the most powerful territory firm in the country. I wasn't the tired, overworked wolf David rejected three years ago. The Council was going to see exactly who I had become.
The hearing chamber was a large, circular room with tiered seating for the seven Elder judges. The walls were lined with ancient pack law texts, and the formal seal of the High Council was carved into the stone above the Elder bench. It was designed to feel intimidating.
David was already seated at the petitioner's table when I walked in. He wore a fresh suit, his lawyer seated beside him. He looked up when I entered, watching me take my seat at the respondent's table across from him. His eyes swept over my composed expression, clearly searching for a sign of panic or weakness.
He found neither.
Julian entered behind me, taking a seat in the front row of the gallery directly behind my table. Kaden slipped in a few seconds later, dropping into the seat beside Julian. The two of them exchanged a brief, tense glance before fixing their attention on the front of the room.
The seven Elders filed in, taking their seats at the bench. The head Elder, a grey-haired female wolf named Elder Soren, looked over the room before calling the session to order.
"This hearing concerns the petition filed by Alpha David of the Silver Pack, requesting the legal reinstatement of a mate bond on the grounds of an incomplete rejection ritual," Elder Soren announced. "Both parties are present. We will hear the petitioner first."
David's lawyer stood up, presenting the three ancient statutes and the High Priestess's signed statement. He argued that the rejection was verbally issued but never legally finalized, and that under ancient law, the bond remained active. He requested the Council order an immediate reinstatement of the bond and a mandatory merging of pack assets.
I listened without reacting, keeping my eyes on the Elder bench.
When David's lawyer sat down, Nathan stood up.
"The respondent acknowledges that the blood seal ceremony was not conducted," Nathan began. "However, the rejection was issued publicly, before five credible witnesses, all of whom were serving pack elders at the time of the incident. The respondent verbally accepted the rejection in the presence of those same witnesses. Under modern pack law, statute forty-two, section nine, a witnessed verbal rejection accepted by both parties constitutes a legally binding severance when followed by a minimum separation period of one year with no formal attempts to reinstate the bond."
David's lawyer jumped up. "Ancient law supersedes modern statute in matters of the mate bond."
"Only when the bond remains uncontested for less than ninety days," Nathan countered. "The petitioner waited three years to file this claim. Under statute sixty-one, section four, a delayed petition of this nature is only valid if the petitioning party can demonstrate that the delay was caused by circumstances beyond their control."
Elder Soren leaned forward. "Can the petitioner demonstrate such circumstances?"
David's lawyer hesitated, shuffling through his papers.
I kept my eyes forward, but I heard David shift in his seat behind me.
"The petitioner submits that the delay was caused by a period of financial instability," the lawyer said carefully, "which prevented Alpha David from pursuing legal proceedings."
Nathan looked at me, and I gave him a brief nod. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a thick folder, placing it on the Elder bench.
"The respondent submits Silver Holdings' financial records for the past three years," Nathan stated. "These records show that the petitioner's company generated significant revenue during the first eighteen months following the separation, well within the ninety-day contestation window. The petitioner had the financial means to file this petition within the valid timeframe and chose not to. The delay was not circumstantial. It was strategic."
The room went very quiet.
Elder Soren opened the folder, scanning the financial records. The other Elders leaned in, reviewing the documents. David's lawyer whispered frantically into his client's ear. David sat rigid in his chair, staring at the back of my head.
"The Council will take a brief recess to review the submitted evidence," Elder Soren announced, standing up.
The Elders filed out of the chamber. The room broke into quiet murmurs. Julian leaned forward from behind me, dropping his voice low.
"You came prepared," Julian said.
"I always come prepared," I replied, keeping my eyes forward.
Across the room, David pushed back his chair and stood up, walking toward my table. His lawyer grabbed his arm, but David shook him off. He stopped at the edge of my table, staring down at me.
"You really want to do this?" David asked, his voice low and tight. "You want to drag our history in front of the entire Council?"
"You started this, David," I replied, looking up at him. "I'm just finishing it."
David leaned down, dropping his voice to a whisper. "I still have one card left to play, Clara. And when I play it, you are going to wish you had taken my offer yesterday."
Before I could respond, the chamber doors swung open. The Elders filed back in, taking their seats faster than expected. Elder Soren's expression was unreadable as she settled behind the bench and called the room back to order.
"The Council has reviewed the submitted evidence," Elder Soren said, her eyes moving between David and me. "However, before we deliver our initial ruling, new evidence has been submitted to this Council within the last ten minutes that fundamentally changes the nature of this hearing."
I sat forward, my stomach tightening.
"New evidence submitted by the petitioner," Elder Soren continued, holding up a sealed document, "claims that the respondent, Clara Adams, is currently operating a shell company that holds illegal ownership over Silver Pack territory, obtained through fraudulent registration during the period of the active mate bond."
The room erupted into noise. Julian shot to his feet behind me. Kaden's expression turned thunderous.
I sat very still, staring at Elder Soren, my mind already moving three steps ahead.
