I shot to my feet the very second Father said those words.
The movement was so sudden and fast that my chair scraped loudly against the stone floor behind me. The harsh sound echoed off the high walls of the throne room. My heart slammed violently against my ribs, like a bird trying to escape a cage. I felt like the air had been sucked out of the room.
