I had not even reached the door to my room when the noise started. At first, the sound was muffled. It sounded like distant thunder hidden behind the thick stone walls of the castle. I stopped walking and stood still in the middle of the hallway. I tilted my head to listen better.
Then the noise grew louder. I heard the sound of someone pleading. Someone was begging for their life. I heard many voices overlapping each other in a state of pure panic. I felt a wave of annoyance wash over me. I wondered if they were still talking about me in the throne room. I wondered if they were still busy blaming me for everything that was wrong in their lives.
My jaw tightened. I thought about the way Chris had slapped me and the way Catherine had lied about the necklace. I
