CHAPTER 5

The words dissolved into nothing as his gaze locked onto Elena in the darkness. She stood there, oblivious to the truth, and it struck him like a physical blow. How could she possibly not be aware of what she truly was? How could she not feel the primal pull of the wolf that lived and breathed beneath her very skin? For heaven's sake, he could track her scent from miles away that rich, intoxicating fragrance that marked her as one of his kind, as surely as if she bore the mark of the moon on her soul. The air around her practically hummed with the wild essence of the wolf, and yet she looked at him with eyes that held no recognition of the beast within. Suddenly, the night erupted with the frenzied howls of the rogue wolf pack, their cries slicing through the stillness like glass. They had discovered her absence, and the alarm was spreading like wildfire through their ranks. Every second they lingered was a second lost, a heartbeat closer to being discovered. They had to move, and they had to move now, before it was too late. Without a hesitation, Ronan acted on pure instinct, bending down and sweeping Elena effortlessly into his powerful arms. Her body was light against his chest, but her reaction was anything but passive. "What the hell do you think you're doing? Get your hands off me this instant!" she spat, her voice sharp. She thrashed against his iron grip, her small fists pounding uselessly against his shoulders, but he didn't loosen his grip, his hold firm and unyielding. "If you value your life, you will hold on to me and not let go," he commanded, his voice low and sharp, carrying the weight of authority. Then she wrapped her arms around his neck. He stiffened under her touch for a brief second before getting his mind back on the mission, which was getting her out of this nightmare alive. Then he launched himself forward, sprinting through the forest, dodging trees and low hanging branches. His wolf enhanced agility guided him through treacherous terrain. Putting distance between them and the rogue wolves. And he intended to keep it that way. After what felt like an eternity, he finally burst out of the woods . The cool night air rushed over them, a welcome relief. He came to a sudden halt and set her down on her feet with more force than he’d intended, his movements rough and impatient. “Jerk.” She mumbled under her breath, tightened the jacket tighter around her trembling frame as she shot him a glare that could have melted steel. He chose to ignore her fiery temperament, dismissing her insult with a roll of his shoulders. There were more pressing matters at hand. He strode over to a nearby cluster of bushes and began yanking away the tangled branches he had carefully arranged to conceal his black motorcycle in the moonlight. Her eyes went wide as she took in the sight of the beastly machine. "A motorcycle?" she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief. "Not just any motorcycle," he corrected, a rare flicker of pride coloring his tone. "This is a BMW R69S. The finest machine ever built. Tell me, have you ever ridden on one before?" He already knew the answer, of course. Someone like her had probably never so much as touched a motorcycle, let alone straddled one. He imagined she’d worry about the wind ruining her perfect hair. “No.” she admitted, her voice small. "Well, then, it seems tonight is your lucky night, princess." He reached into the saddlebag and retrieved the helmet, unfastening it from its strap. He stepped toward her and carefully settled it over her head, his fingers brushing against her soft hair as he adjusted the fit and began tugging the chin straps into place. "I can handle it myself," she huffed, swatting his hands away. She fumbled with the straps beneath her chin, her fingers clumsy in her haste. “Make sure it’s tight.” he instructed, his voice filled with concern. "A loose helmet is as good as no helmet at all." He scowled, turning his attention back to the saddlebag, where he retrieved her garment, the very ones she had been wearing when he’d first laid eyes on her. Her eyes narrowed with suspicion as she recognized the garment. "My clothes?" she asked, her voice laced with wariness. "Put them on," he ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument. "They won't do much to shield you from the cold, but at least they'll keep you decent while we ride." She turned her back to him without another word, her movements quick and awkward as she shimmied into the thin clothes. He busied himself with the BMW, kicking the engine to life. The machine roared beneath him, a deep rumble that vibrated through his fingertips like a living heartbeat, thrumming with raw power. When she was finished, she placed her hands on his broad shoulders and swung her leg over the seat, settling in behind him with evident hesitation. He held his breath, every nerve in his body was awakened to her movements, waiting for her to close the gap between them. His BMW was built for speed, not comfort. If she wanted to stay on, she would have to press herself against him, her body molded to his, for the entire duration of the ride. "You're going to have to hold on tightly if you don't want to be thrown off," he warned, his voice strained. He felt a subtle release of tension in his shoulders as she complied, her arms sliding around his chest and locking together, her grip firm and determined. Her warmth seeped through his jacket, and he forced himself to ignore the strange flutter in his chest. Reaching into his pocket, he withdrew the remote detonator for the second Pax-52 charge he had planted deep within the enemy camp. His thumb hovered over the button for just a moment, and then he pressed it. A deafening explosion tore through the night, a roaring inferno that painted the sky orange and red. The ground seemed to shudder beneath them as the blast lit up the forest like a second sun. “Hold on tight,” he shouted over the roar of the engine. He tore down the dirt road, the BMW surging forward with a furious burst of speed. He braced himself for the familiar suffocating dread that always clawed at his chest whenever he was forced into close physical contact with another person. Her fingers dug into his shirt, and his heart rate spiked, racing dangerously. But to his astonishment the crushing weight of panic never descended. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, his mind remained clear, his focus unbroken. As soon as the tires hit the smooth asphalt of the paved road, he opened the throttle, pushing the machine to its limits. The world around them dissolved into a blur of shadows and streaks of moonlight, the wind howling in their ears. He needed to put as much distance as possible between them and the kidnappers, to outrun the nightmare that still nipped at their heels. At their current speed, he calculated that they would have Elena safely back in her home in less than six hours. It was a slim comfort, but it was hope. Thirty minutes into the ride, however, he felt a slight change, a faint trembling in her fingers where they clutched at his chest. His brow furrowed. He had been so focused on their escape that he had completely overlooked her comfort. She was shivering, her body fighting a losing battle against the biting wind in only her thin clothes. If he didn't act soon, she would freeze to death long before they reached their destination. "I'm going to pull over at the next truck stop," he yelled over the wind, his voice firm. "I need to get you some proper clothes, something warm." "No!" she cried out desperately, her nails digging into his chest sharp points of protest. "Don't stop. Please, don't stop." "I have to, Elena. You're going to freeze to death if I don't," he insisted, his tone final. He did not rescue her only to watch her freeze to death, because of his negligence. "If they catch us, they'll drag me back to that hellhole," she said, her voice cracking with raw terror. "I would rather freeze to death a thousand times over than ever set foot in that place again." Her words struck him like a blow, twisting something deep in his gut. This was the kind of terror that had burrowed into her very soul. "Ronan, please," she begged, her voice breaking, and that single plea pierced a place inside him he had long believed to be sealed off from the world. A place he had never thought anyone would ever be able to reach. His jaw tightened, his knuckles whitening on the handlebars. A cold, murderous resolve settled over him like a second skin. He would make it his personal mission, his sacred vow to hunt down every last one of those rogue wolves who had dared to lay their filthy hands on her. He would show them no mercy. They would pay for every second of her suffering. "We'll be home in four hours," he said, his voice softer now. "But I'm stopping to make a phone call. I'll also arrange for someone to bring you proper clothing then. Can you endure until that time?" He frowned as the words left his mouth, part of him fighting the decision. Instinct screamed at him to stop now, but her plea had overruled his logic. "Yes," she breathed, her body relaxing against his back, a small sigh of relief escaping her lips. He wished he could share that sense of calm, that fleeting moment. But deep down, in the primal core of his being, his wolf instincts were screaming a warning. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot. The hunt was far from finished, and the shadows were closing in.
