13 Convincing her parents that she wasn’t insane wasn’t easy. Harlow had just finished cleaning the blood from the laundry room floor when her mother appeared in the doorway to ask what had happened. Ryske and Ophelia were gone. Harlow explained that it was for the best. Her mother assumed something had transpired between her and Ophelia. At least, that’s what Harlow overheard their mother telling Lena a while later. Jean was explaining to her youngest daughter that the two girlfriends had had a spat and Ryske had gone to defend his fiancée. As any good fiancé should. Restraining herself wasn’t easy. What she really wanted to do was leap around the doorframe and tell Lena that no woman needed a man to do a damn thing for her and she should stand up for herself if someone wronged her.
